Nintendo Launches WiiWare with Six Games

Nintendo Launches WiiWare with Six Games

Almost a full year after Nintendo first allowed gamers to peak under the lid on WiiWare, the company has finally pushed it live. The freshly launched service allows Internet-connected Wiis to access an online collection of games for download.

The primary appeal of WiiWare since its announcement has been its potential as a channel for smaller game studios to put out games without the cost of distributing them through conventional means. The WiiWare launch seems to hold true to this premise, with games from small studios including Frontier Development, XGen Studops, Nnooo, High Voltage Software, and Gameloft.

Just in time for the holidays, Nintendo has unveiled a new gifting feature for its Wii Shop Channel. Beginning this week, owners of Nintendo’s Wii video game console will be able to purchase classic games using the Wii Shop Channel, and send them to other Wii owners with whom they’ve already traded Friend Codes. And if the intended recipient already has the game you’re trying to give them, no worries: buyers will receive a message and be returned to the catalog with their wallets intact.

Nintendo Launches WiiWare Channel

Nintendo is attempting to reach out to smaller game developers and simultaneously build available content for the Wii by launching WiiWare, an online channel for distributing games without the barriers involved with traditional publishing. Although the unusable channel has been visible to Wii gamers for some time, Nintendo officially announced their intentions for WiiWare Tuesday morning.

“Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime, in a statement. “WiiWare brings new levels of creativity and value to the ever-growing population of Wii owners.”

Owners of Nintendo’s hot-selling Wii game console can access the Wii Shop channel and spend Wii Points to download video games originally developed for the NES, SuperNES, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, and TurboGrafx16 consoles. For some gamers, these games represent blasts of nostalgia; to new gamers, they often represent fun, easy-to-play games which enhance the value of the Wii console.
