Id Software Gets On Board with Steam

Id Software Gets On Board with Steam

Although Id Software and Valve have always been seen as rival FPS developers, Id made a significant concession to its competitor last week by signing on with the company’s Steam online distribution service. Id CEO Todd Hollenshead revealed his company’s move during a keynote address at QuakeCon on Friday, an Id-centric gaming event in Texas.

Gamers are now able to download every Id game up to Doom 3, and all the way back to ID classics like the Commander Keen series and Wolfenstein 3D. Prices range from $4.95 for older games to $19.95 for the newest.

Civilization IV: Beyond The Sword Ships

Civilization IV: Beyond The Sword Ships

2K Games has shipped the largest expansion pack for the Civilization IV strategy game franchise, Sid Meier’s Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword, adding a wealth of new civilizations, units, wonders, inventions, technologies, and an advanced AI to the popular title, focusing on late-game eras afer the invention of gunpowder.

“Given the overwhelming critical and commercial success of Sid Meier’s Civilization IV, we were inspired to provide these loyal fans with the series’ most robust expansion pack ever,” said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K, in a release. “By featuring more content than any other Civilization expansion pack, Sid Meier’s Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword is a must-have for all Civilization fans and will set a new industry-wide bar for expansions.”

Sid Meier Developing New Civilization Title

The Gods of Gaming have been busy. John Carmack is working on a next-gen game engine, Chris Taylor is already cranking away on a new Supreme Commander, and now Sid Meier is dedicating himself to a new Civilization title. The publishing label 2K announced on Thursday that Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution is officially in development by Firaxis games.

SimCity Societies Not Developed By Maxis

The SimCity franchise is making a comeback, but it may not exactly be what fans expect. News of SimCity: Societies broke yesterday from Games for Windows Magazine, but as further details trickle out, it appears we’re in for something quite unlike the original SimCity games.

For one, the game won’t be developed at Maxis at all, leaving any hope of Sid Meier’s heavy involvement squashed. Instead, Tilted Mill Entertainment will handle its development, creators of Children of the Nile and Caesar IV. Both games use a top-down perspective and SimCity-like interface, so there’s even a possibility we’ll see the newest incarnation borrow an engine.

Game developer Aspyr has shipped its port of Take 2 Interactive’s Civilization IV for both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macintosh systems. The latest installment of Sid Meier’s famous empire-building (or theocracy-building, autocracy-building, democracy-building, republic-building, or

2K Games Announces Rome Building Game

2K Games, a Take-Two Interactive Software publishing label, and Firaxis Games yesterday announced they were developing a new city building strategy game inspired by the world of Sid Meier’s Civilization. CivCity: Rome is being developed by Firefly Studios, the creators of the Stronghold franchise, and should be available for the PC this summer.
