Is it Time for a Home Server?

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been testing three new home servers, two from HP and a potential revolutionary concept called a nano-plug server. This last one uses Marvell technology, comes from a company called CloudEngines, and it is called the Pogoplug. Let’s talk about home servers today, why you may want one, and what makes these particular models stand out.

What Is A Home Server?

DIRECTV Sues Signal Thief

DIRECTV has taken a signal thief, who has already been served a permanent injunction order, to court.  The complaint alleges that Elio Gino D’Amario, of Hamilton, Ontaro, resells pirate signal devices on a website despite a court order compelling him to stop.  D’Amario was first identified in 1999 as being involved with a network of online companies selling pirate cable box supplies.

A raid in conjunction with the complaint has taken down the website.  Contempt of such orders may lead to serious repercussions, such including jail time.

Smarthome Proposes Home Automation Standard

The company’s Insteon standard is targeted to the do-it-yourself and custom-install markets and will be available in Smarthome-brand products in the first quarter of 2005, said Smarthome’s CEO Joe Dada. Insteon chips will be available on an OEM basis to other suppliers at about the same time.

Insteon products will include in-wall light switches and dimmers; electrical outlets; wall-wart modules that plug into existing electrical outlets; screw-in light-bulb adapters; and in- and on-wall programmable keypads that control such systems as HVAC, security, lighting and drapery. Insteon-equipped adapters and electrical outlets could also be used to control pool pumps, outdoor lighting systems and sprinkler systems.

Quote from the review:

“Overall, the Wireless Access Point (after properly connecting it to the network) performed quite well, accepting connections from both 802.11g and 802.11b standards. It definitely helped bridging the signal that was needed in the room that seemed remotely far away from the router. The only time that the signal (slightly) weakened was when I was surfing in the kitchen with the microwave running…”
