EA Donates Copies of SimCity for Every OLPC

While One Laptop Per Child computers are already slated to have a handful of open-source games included on them, one major game publisher will take that list of games to the next level by donating an old-school classic from its archives. Electronic Arts announced on Thursday that it would donate the original 1989  version of SimCity on every OLPC sold.

Besides being a fun way to get kids using the computer, EA believes SimCity can also help them learn. “SimCity is entertainment that’s unintentionally educational,” said Steve Seabolt, vice president of global brand development for The Sims Label, in a statement. “Players learn to use limited resources to build and customize their cities. There are choices and consequences, but in the end, it’s a creativity tool that’s only limited by the player’s imagination.”

SimCity Societies Tackles Global Warming

Players of the next-generation SimCity game will not only have to worry about tax rates, traffic and zoning, they’ll also have to start figuring out how to keep their cities’ carbon emissions down. Electronic Arts announced on Wednesday [PDF] that it will collaborate with energy supplier BP to incorporate climate change into SimCity Societies.

SimCity Societies Not Developed By Maxis

The SimCity franchise is making a comeback, but it may not exactly be what fans expect. News of SimCity: Societies broke yesterday from Games for Windows Magazine, but as further details trickle out, it appears we’re in for something quite unlike the original SimCity games.

For one, the game won’t be developed at Maxis at all, leaving any hope of Sid Meier’s heavy involvement squashed. Instead, Tilted Mill Entertainment will handle its development, creators of Children of the Nile and Caesar IV. Both games use a top-down perspective and SimCity-like interface, so there’s even a possibility we’ll see the newest incarnation borrow an engine.
