Ubisoft Acquires Hybride

Games creation company Ubisoft has announced that it’s acquired visual effects company Hybride Technologies, the Canadian company that added visual effects to movies like 300, Sin City and the Spy Kids series.

Ubisoft plans to share technology to up the quality of effects for games and, through Hybride, to hopefully brings its intellectual properties to the screen.

Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft’s CEO, said:

“The acquisition of Hybride falls directly into the strategy that has already led us to open in digital creation studio in Montreal and to acquire the Tom Clancy brand for video games and ancillary products. The exception quality of the team at Hybride and the expertise of our Ubisoft teams will allow us to create one of the best 3D animation studios in the animation industry.”

Midway Announces E3 Game Lineup

Game publisher Midway is getting a little out in front of announcements tied to next week’s E3 video game trade show, announcing a slate of titles it plans to show off…along with their anticipated ship dates.

"These games truly reflect our product strategy to develop top quality titles in a wide range of genres that appeal to all segments of the market," said Midway’s interim president and CEO Matthew Booty in a statement.

Sin City Game to Use Unreal Engine 3

Red Mile Entertainment has been flying low under radar since it first announced development of a Sin City game back in May, but fans eager for information on the game got a fresh dose of info on Thursday: It will use the Unreal Engine 3.

Epic Games’ engine-for-hire is the same core technology behind games like Gears of War, Unreal Tournament, and BioShock. It includes a suite of content creation tools, along with support for features like ragdoll physics, advanced gameplay scripting, and massive world support.

MySpace Resurrects Comic Book Staple

The online social-networking site MySpace, already a purveyor of videos, music, and even jobs,  announced Friday that comics will be the next site’s next offering. At the annual Comic Con in San Diego, MySpace revealed that Dark Horse Comics would revive its Dark Horse Presents anthology as an online feature for the site.

Originally, Dark Horse Presents ran as a hard copy comic book published between 1986 and 2000. In the comic world, it’s notable for bringing both Frank Miller’s Sin City and Paul Chadwick’s Concrete to popularity. The anthology mainly served as a medium for new comic authors to get their work read by larger audiences.

Home, Sweet Tech Home

Las Vegas’ Chapel of Love has attracted many a lovebird, and two organizations with vested interests in seeing the ‘home of the future’ become a reality were also smitten in Sin City.  

The National Association of Home Builders, or NAHB, and CEDIA, an international trade association of companies that specialize in designing and installing electronic systems for the home, announced on Thursday a cooperative program, called The Home Technology Alliance. The deal will focus on ‘home technology integration’ and communicate the benefits of partnering with CEDIA Members as well as demonstrate the opportunities for providing better service to homeowners regarding technology, according to the company statement.

  • The online encyclopedia Wikipedia was most referenced to for podcasts and Hurricane Katrina.
  • The top online news source cited by bloggers was Yahoo! News.
