We see it all come through these doors. From $15 headphone cable keepers to $4,000 televisions and speaker systems, the staff here at DT have access to a veritable toy box of cool stuff. Of course, it all has to go back eventually, at which point we mourn the loss of our favorite gadgets and move on. Or if something’s really good, add it to that all elusive wish list. From the guys who have seen it all, here’s the stuff we would love to find under the tree this Christmas.

When it comes to digital cameras, there’s a time and place for function, and one for fashion instead. Case in point: The hefty five-pound DSLR cameras you see pros muscling around at press conferences and football games are the tools of the trade for shooting magazine covers and Pulitzer award winners. But when it’s time for a night out on the town? That’s when you leave the big guns and tripods at home. Whether club hopping or twirling around a ballroom, the ideal point-and-shoot digital camera needs to fit the tiniest suit pockets and handbags, fire up at a moment’s notice, and, most of all, look good doing so. Here are a few of our favorite models that fit the bill.

Two years ago, Google Android was nothing more than a rumor on technology blogs. Twelve months later, its sole representative was one awkward brick of a phone that looked like a prototype that had escaped from a testing lab. And today, lo and behold, the little open source operating system (OS) that could is undergoing a veritable renaissance, with manufacturers unveiling new, better cell phones left and right.

High-Powered Netbooks
- The generous 12.1-inch screen on Lenovo’s S12 already makes it a bargain at $450, but users who crave more power will be able to pick one up with Nvidia’s Ion graphics chip (which boosts game playing and video watching capabilities) at the end of October for $550.
- Originally slated to be the first Ion-powered netbook on the block with a summer launch, Samsung has bounced the release date for the 11.6-inch N510 back to late October to coincide with the launch of Windows 7. However, power comes at a price: The system somewhat edges out of netbook territory with a rather steep $600 SRP.

Amazon Kindle 2$259
After taking the world by storm with the original Kindle, Amazon returned to the drawing board for the Kindle 2, a slimmer, sexier version of the original. It offers a 6-inch screen, 2GB of internal memory (to hold about 1,500 nonillustrated books) and most importantly, Whispernet access to pull down books from the sky when you’re out and about. Text-to-speech capabilities even allow it to read books to, if you don’t mind a little robotic intonation. Sadly, it’s missing a touch screen, and many users bemoan the lack of a backlight for evening reading. It also only handles Amazon’s DRM-protected AZW books, free Mobipocket titles, and plain text files, leaving out the popular PDF and EPUB formats.

TV chef Alton Brown has it right: Unitaskers – specialty devices that only perform one function – have no place in the kitchen. And single-purpose gadgets have no place in your pocket. The same way lemon zesters to garlic presses clutter up kitchen drawers and cabinets, electronic voice recorders and standalone CD players fill up your briefcase and entertainment center without ever justifying their existence in more than one very limited way. Though we may make exceptions for purebred machines that far outperform their all-in-one counterparts, most gadgets need to earn their keep in a multitude of ways. Here are 10 of our favorite do-it-all devices.

Attendance at the just-concluded CEDIA (Custom Electronics Design & Installation Association) Expo, held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, was down for the second straight year to around 20,000, and the number of exhibitors shrunk from 500 to 400. But the good news for home theater enthusiasts is as follows: What the various exhibitors that remained actually exhibited was a considerable amount of ingenuity.

Buttons belong to 20th century. While we’re sure that making electrical contact with the press of finger seemed nigh-miraculous at the same time that most people were still using the bathroom outside, the little switches and levers that brought us to this current age of technology have worn out their welcome. We’re ready for something better. We’re ready for something more refined. We’re ready for touch screens.
