Executives Bow Out of Sling Media

About a year ago, Sling Media was acquired by satellite television provider EchoStar in a deal worth $380 million. Now, the company says five of its key executives are departing the company, including co-founders Blake and Jason Kirkorian, president Jason Hirschhorn, chief creative officer Ben White, and sales VP Greg Wilkes.

Sling Media makes the well-regarded SlingBox, SlingCatcher, and SlingPlayer Mobile, devices intended to enable users to watch their home television feeds (as well as access their digital content libraries, music, and recorded programming) from anywhere in the world via broadband Internet. When EchoStar bought the company, the deal included an agreement to keep Sling Media’s executive team in place; that agreement has now expired and Sling’s leadership is moving on.

Slingbox Slings Up to Canada

Sling Media yesterday said they’d officially started sales of their popular Slingbox in Canada. The Slingbox will cost $299 CAD.

The Slingbox, said Sling Media, will be available across Canada in retailers such as Best Buy, Future Shop and London Drugs, as well as online. Sling Media is working together with Keating Technologies, a sales, marketing and support outsourcer and Ingram Micro, a Canadian distributor, to launch the Slingbox in the Canadian market. The Slingbox redirects, or “placeshifts,” a single live TV stream from a basic cable connection, cable box, satellite receiver or digital video recorder (DVR) to the viewer’s PC — located anywhere in the home or anywhere in the world, via the Internet.

Sling Media is expected to show off a new mobile client at this week’s CES show in Las Vegas, enabling users to watch any television channel available at their house from anywhere they have broadband access via a Windows Mobile device, such as a Windows-based smartphone or PDA.

Sling Media’s current Slingbox hardware product enables “placeshifting”, whereby users can watch live television anywhere they go using a PC or laptop. The Slingbox device connects to a user’s home TV, encodes, encrypts, and digitally transmits channel selections to an authorized remote user via the Internet.
