Facebook Violates Canadian Privacy Laws?

Facebook Violates Canadian Privacy Laws?

Following a complaint from the Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic, Canada’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner has wrapped up a serious look into how social networking site Facebook handles privacy and user information…and the findings do not show Facebook in a good light. The report notes that Facebook is obviously concerned with user privacy, but that that service has “serious gaps” in the way it operates and handles users’ personal information, and even violates Canadian law by retaining information on deactivated accounts for an indefinite period of time.

Judge Set To Overturn Conviction Of MySpace Bully

Judge Set To Overturn Conviction Of MySpace Bully

It looks as if Lori Drew, the Missouri woman accused of cyber bullying a teenage girl on MySpace who later killed herself, will walk free.

She supposedly posed as a teenage boy on the social networking site and developed a relationship with 13-year-old Megan Meier, before dumping her with the words "the world would be better off without." Meier committed suicide.

Drew, 50, was found guilty of illegally accessing computers, but Judge George Wu has indicated he’s tentatively acquitting her, saying:

“If Drew were convicted for breaking the social networking site’s terms of service, "you could prosecute pretty much anyone who violated terms of service."

Guns N’ Roses, McCartney Go MySpace

Guns N

In a major coup for social networking site MySpace, both rock band Guns N’ Roses and Sir Paul McCartney (in his experimental guise as the Fireman) have opted to debut their albums on the site before they’re available for sale, either physically or online.

The tracks will only be streamed and can’t be downloaded. In the case of G N’ R, the album is the long-delayed Chinese Democracy, which cost a supposed $13 million and arrives a mere 15 years after the band’s last release. However, fans might well have already found most of the tracks, which have sneaked out illegally online here and there, and even – legally – in a video game. The CD will appear on November 23 exclusively through Best Buy.

MySpace Cyberbullying Case Begins

Lori Drew lived with her daughter in St. Louis. Next door was Megan Meier, who was 13. Meier and Drew’s daughter were reportedly friends, but fell out. And with that began a strange and tragic tale that’s ended in a courtroom.

Prosecutors claim that after the girls argued Drew and others created the fake profile of a 16-year-old boy named Josh Evans on social networking site MySpace. Allegedly, after starting an online relationship with Meier, “Josh Evans” left her several cruel messages to end the relationship, including one saying that the world would be better off without her. Meier later hung herself.

LinkedIn Surges From Credit Crunch

LinkedIn Surges From Credit Crunch

Times might be tough in the economy, but they’re looking up for business social networking site LinkedIn, which has reported a 25% increase in sign ups since September.

People are eager to work on their networking contacts as the job market contracts and many are scrambling for work. During the summer the site had added users at the rate of about a million every 20 days. That’s now risen to a million every two weeks. The company has also reported a 15% increase in the last two months in the issuing of invitations to get people to join business networking circles and a 14% increase in the amount of recommendations made by users endorsing another member of LinkedIn, the Guardian reports.
