The people spoke on condition of anonymity because talks are confidential.

An announcement could be weeks away, and terms are still being negotiated, but MySpace is trying to revamp itself and its MySpace Music joint venture with the major recording companies.

An acquisition could bolster the unit of News Corp. by adding imeem’s approximately 4.5 million users, its technology and its executives, including founder and CEO Dalton Caldwell.

Internet Use Leads to More Diverse Networks

fb-bigA new study confirms what your 130 Facebook friends and scores of Twitter followers may have already told you: The Internet and mobile phones are not linked to social isolation.

Online activities such as e-mail, blogging and frequenting Internet hangouts can even lead to larger, more diverse social networks, according to the study released Wednesday by the Pew Internet and American Life Project. The study refutes research earlier in the decade suggesting that people’s growing embrace of technology has come at the expense of close human connections.

Earlier this year, a devastating bushfire killed 173 people in the Australian state of Victoria and destroyed countless properties. The residents said they had little in the way of early warning of the blaze.

Now the government will change that, by using social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook to give early warnings. Victorian state premier John Brumby said:

"We’ll be providing more information to the community, like Twitter and Facebook – alternative means of communication to get the information out to the public."

NPD: Twitterers Buy More Music

NPD: Twitterers Buy More Music

If microblogging service Twitter needed another shot in the arm (after becoming a surprising conduit of information about about unrest in Iran and being the service-of-the-moment for U.S. mass media coverage), the service got another boost today: research firm NPD says that Twitter users buy some 77 percent more digital music than average Web users. In other words, Twitter users represent an engaged online audience willing to spend money…and if nothing else makes online businesses flock to Twitter, that will.
