Airbiquity Shows New Song Tagging Service

Connection service Airbiquity is introducing a new song tagging service that can make purchase of that great tune you hear when driving a lot easier.

It utilizes the song tag, an encrypted digital code identifying a specific song, to single out the song. When a song is tagged, the Airbiquity technology stores the song’s metadata code including title, artist and year. When the user presses the “Save Tags” buttons, the metadata is sent in real-time to the user’s online account. The user later logs in via a customizable web portal where he can review his favorite tags and purchase the songs. Song tags are sent from the vehicle using Airbiquity’s patented aqLink modem to its VIAaq managed services platform, and no subscription is required.

Imagining the Apple or Google Netbook

There is a lot of speculation here in the Silicon Valley that Apple will be launching its low-cost netbook early in 2009, possibly to eclipse CES, the Consumer Electronics Show, next year. I figured it would be fun to imagine what an Apple netbook might look like and, given that a number of us are speculating that Google is on a similar path, contrast it with the anticipated Google offering. Think of this as an interesting, and relatively safe, thing to chat about during the holidays.

File-Sharing Damages Deemed Constitutional

File-Sharing Damages Deemed Constitutional

The Recording Industry Association of America may be running into resistance in Oregon, but further up in the judicial system, the organization’s pursuit of small-time file sharers is being viewed favorably. In a brief filed Monday, the U.S. Department of Justice sided with the RIAA in a file-sharing case where $220,000 in damages had been racked up against one person.

Specifically, the case was that of Jammie Thomas, a single mother in Minnesota who had the full weight of the law fall on her for sharing 24 copyrighted songs on her computer. After her first trial resulted in statutory damages of $9,250 per song – $220,000 in total – being assigned, she appealed the case and hoped to show that such damages were unconstitutionally excessive.

AT&T Adopts Pandora Radio on 3G Handsets

The Music Genome Project’s popular Pandora radio will finally break free of the desktop, now that AT&T has enabled the music service on many of its 3G phones. Although AT&T has long offered streaming music for subscribers, Pandora is unique in the way it allows users to select songs.

Using an enormous database, Pandora catalogs the attributes of each song it carries, and can create an entire radio station of similar songs with just one selection. By giving each song a thumbs up or thumbs down as it plays, users can continue to fine-tune the station to their tastes the more they listen.
