Sony And Nvidia Collaborate On PS3 GPU

Both companies are jointly developing a custom graphics processing unit (GPU) incorporating NVIDIA’s next-generation GeForce and SCEI’s system solutions for next-generation computer entertainmentsystems featuring the Cell* processor.

This collaboration is made under a broad, multi-year, royalty-bearing agreement.  The powerful custom GPU will be the graphics and image processing foundation for a broad range of applications from computer entertainment to broadband applications.  The agreement will encompass future Sony digital consumer electronics products.

Anti-Cheating Software Coming To Sony PS2

IT GlobalSecure, Inc., a provider of advanced game security products, including SecurePlay(TM), and game engineering services, has announced that it has joined the Sony ComputerEntertainment Inc., (SCEI) PlayStation(R)2 Tools & Middleware Program. IT GlobalSecure’s SecurePlay software is the only product on the market today that actually allows game developers toprevent many forms of game cheating.

“By entering this program, IT GlobalSecure, Inc. further expands our ability to provide games with a secure, cheat-proof game infrastructure,” states Cheryl Campbell, President of IT GlobalSecure. “We are very pleased to be able to bring SecurePlay to SCEI’s PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system.”

Sony to invest in next-generation chip

The Japanese consumer electronics company and its video game unit will invest in state-of-the-art 12-inch wafer-based chipmaking facilities using 65-nanometer process technology, the companies saidin a joint statement.

About $608 million of the investment is earmarked for the current fiscal year through March 2004, the statement said.

The Sony group plans to manufacture large-scale integrated circuits for broadband networking applications, including a new general purpose processor for its next-generation computer entertainment system.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., Sony’s video game unit, has been jointly developing the processor – code-named CELL – with Japan’s Toshiba Corp. and U.S. computer giant IBM since 2001.

No ’shock and awe’ for Sony

Responding to criticism that it was trying to take advantage of the Iraq war for commercial gain, Sony Corp said on Wednesday it will not use the phrase “shock and awe” for PlayStation videogames made by a subsidiary.

A U.S. unit of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc has withdrawn an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to register the phrase for commercial use, a Sony spokeswoman said.

The application had been made last month shortly after U.S.-led forces began an attack on Iraq with a strategy of heavy aerial bombardment termed “shock and awe.”

Sony shift’s production of PS2 to China

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc currently makes half of its PlayStation 2s at two plants in Japan. Sony expects to move all of its production to Chinese plants run by Taiwanese companies Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (
