Sony To Develop 200Gbyte Blu-ray Storage

“The company further plans to commercialise a 4-layer 100Gbyte version in 2007, said Sony spokesman Taro Takamine.

“The advantage of Blu-ray over DVD is definitely capacity and we are extending our multilayer performance. The 8-layer is a technology demonstration. We haven’t decided when we are going to commercialise it yet,” Takamine said.

The development is the fourth recent boost for the format as it wrestles with HD-DVD (high definition-DVD) to replace conventional DVDs in coming years. Both Sony and Matsushita Electric Industrial, better known for its Panasonic brand, sell Blu-ray players.”

Sony Sues Kodak Over Digital Camera Patents

Sony, one of the largest makers of digital cameras with a global market share of around 20 percent, said in a suit filed in a U.S. federal court in New Jersey on Wednesday evening that Kodak infringed 10 of its patents related to digital cameras.

“The 10 patents are highly technical,” a Sony spokesman said. “They make the handling of digital images easier and they also make the system control for handling digital still images easier.”

Sony Cancels Release Of New MP3 Players

Sony’s new AZ-FS256 and AZ-FS1 MP3 players were announced last month and were supposed to launch under it’s Aiwa brand. According to Sony, the FM tuners in the units did not function properly and because of this, they could not release the product.

“It is extremely regrettable that this product could not go on sale, and we are very sorry this happened about a product we had announced,” Sony spokesman Daichi Yamafuji said.
