Apple Kills South Park iPhone App

Apple Kills South Park iPhone App

What’s fit for Comedy Central is not always fit for the tender ears of iPhone users. The creators of South Park found this out recently, when Apple denied their application for a South Park iPhone application that would stream clips of the show to users’ phones.

According to a post made to the South Park Studios news blog on Tuesday, the team has made “a couple” attempts to get the application approved by Apple since it was first announced back in October, both of which were unsuccessful. Unlike many other denied iPhone apps, Apple’s reasoning had nothing to do with the South Park app trampling its own apps or endangering the phone – the material was just too risqué.

Veoh Copyright Infringement Suit Dismissed

Veoh Copyright Infringement Suit Dismissed

Judge Howard Lloyd of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California has thrown out a copyright infringement suit brought against Internet video provide Veoh Networks by the adult entertainment firm Io Group Inc., saying Veoh’s active efforts to protect copyright owners’ rights covered the company from any liability for piracy on the service under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s (DMCA) “safe harbor” provision. “The DMCA was intended to facilitate the growth of electronic commerce, not squelch it,” Judge Lloyd wrote, as he granted summary judgement to Veoh.

Viacom to Get YouTube User Histories

As litigation continues in Viacom’s $1 billion copyright infringement suit against Google, a judge has ordered (PDF) Google most turn over the usage histories of every YouTube user to Viacom. The usage logs contain each YouTube user’s login ID, the IP address used to connect to YouTube, as well as a video identifier and a start time.

The court did not order the Google disclose to Viacom its search code, schemas, and other intellectual property, noting that such disclosure—even under a non-disclosure agreement—would cause Google harm since the information carries significant commercial value. The court also ruled Viacom doesn’t get data on privacy videos hosted on YouTube—that is, videos that can only be seen by a user specifically authorized to view it.

Google Says Viacom Suit Threatens Internet

Google Says Viacom Suit Threatens Internet

Remember Viacom’s $1 billion copyright infringement suit against Google, claiming video sharing site YouTube consistently enabled users to post unauthorized copies of Viacom content—like clips from South Park and The Daily Show? The case has been pending for over a year, but a new round of filings is ratcheting up the tension between the companies, and may indicate hopes for an amicable settlement are dwindling. In documents filed with the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, Google is asserting that YouTube "goes far beyond its legal obligations" in enabling copyright owners to flag infringing content—and, moreover, that Viacom’s action to make hosting services liable for infringing content "threatens the way hundreds of millions of people legitimately exchange information."

Microsoft Piles on Zune Content, Features

Microsoft Piles on Zune Content, Features

In the fight against the iPod, few would say Microsoft’s Zune has found much traction, but the company hasn’t given up yet.  On Tuesday, it revealed its latest ploy to ratchet up the Zune from the content end by adding downloadable television shows to the Zune store, along with a new feed-based music downloading option.

The television shows will come from Comedy Central, FUNimation Entertainment, MTV, Nickelodeon, Starz Media, Turner Broadcasting, Ultimate Fighting Championship, VH1 and most interestingly, NBC Universal, which pulled its shows from iTunes back in August. Notable titles include South Park, The Office, and The Hills. Each episode will cost 160 points, which Microsoft says translates to about $1.99.

The Birth of the Optimized PC

It is April which means we are fast approaching Dad’s and Grad’s buying season and for some of you it will be time for a new PC and, given trends, most of you will probably be getting laptops.

Life has historically sucked for laptop users that like to play games, and if you are someone that is thinking “green” but likes performance, it has kind of sucked for you too. The problem has been if you want long battery life or an electric bill that won’t be like an extra car payment you need to buy an underperforming laptop or desktop PC.

Fans of Comedy Centrals’ iconic cartoon series South Park need not spend fortunes on DVD sets or scrounge around online to download episodes illegally any longer. “We got really sick of having to download our own show illegally all the time so we gave ourselves a legal alternative,” Stone and Parker said in their statement. The site includes entire, uncut versions of each episode in a high-resolution streaming format. The team claims that 168 of 169 episodes in the South Park library are now available online
