MS500 Wireless Speaker Blasts Your Tunes in the Great Outdoors

MS500 Wireless Speaker Blasts Your Tunes in the Great Outdoors

For those moments when your cell phone’s wimpy built-in speaker doesn’t quite cut it for blaring your choice of music on a bus or subway car full of annoyed commuters, Sony Ericsson has an upgrade. On Tuesday, the company launched its Outdoor Wireless Speaker MS500, an egg-shaped speaker designed to go anywhere.

The palm-sized unit uses Bluetooth (and the high-quality A2DP profile) to play audio from your phone or personal media player without wires from the speaker beneath its grille. It even includes a caribiner for latching onto an article of clothing and dangling along with you. According to Sony Ericsson, it will run for five hours on the power from two AA batteries. And for bringing it to the beach, or tableside at beer pong tournament, it’s also “splashproof.”

Klipsch Thinks Small with iGroove SXT

Apple’s now-iconic iPods might be all the rage in portable music players, but they don’t offer any built-in capability to pump your music out into the real air. So a mega-industry of iPod peripherals has sprung up, including a number of speaker systems (even one from Apple itself!) designed to convert a iPod into a 21st century boombox. However, many of these speaker systems are bulky, heavy, and take up a heap of space—if that doesn’t appeal to you, audio accessory maker Klipsch would like you to consider its iGroove SXT iPod speaker system.

Genius Offers Two New Speaker Systems

Genius Offers Two New Speaker Systems

Peripheral manufacturer Genius took the wraps off its two latest offerings in the audio market on Monday: a three-piece speaker system for PCs and a compact speaker system for portable audio players.

The SW i-2.1 1100 targets PC gamers, and has features like a wired remote control and earphone jack. All three speakers (two satellites and a sub) put out a combined 28 watts of power, but the 1100 in the name comes from the infamously flaky “peak music power output” rating of 1100 watts. In other words, ignore it. The SW i-2.1 1100 retails for $49.90.

Logitech’s X-540 Has You Surrounded

Logitech

According to Jef Holove, Logitech’s VP of product marketing for audio, the X-540 system provides a "more pragmatic innovation, offering matrix technology and the innovative center-channel clip. It is sure to be a hit with gamers, and our customers can rest assured that, for baseline audio performance, this system outclasses the competition in its price range."

The AudioStation itself is a boombox sized speaker system designed to function as a home stereo, while the AudioStation Express offers a more-portable solution for headphone-free listening.

CES 2006 Profile: Altec Lansing

Speaker manufacturer Altec Lansing brought several new interesting products to CES 2006 which they expect will bring another positive year to their bottom line. These new products are focused mainly on speaker systems for portable audio devices, with a headphone announcement thrown in as well for good measure.

Standing at the front of the line for Altec Lansing’s 2006 line up is the inMotion iM9 ($199.95). Made to be taken into the outdoors, this portable speaker system for dockable iPods is made with shock resistant, rubberized elements. Wi-Fi Pearl to be Found in Oyster Speakers?

Australia based start up Avega Systems today unveiled what they are calling the world’s first Wi-Fi based speaker system. The company hopes to have their new Oyster 802.11 networked loudspeakers into production by the end of the first quarter of this year.

The Oyster speaker system, said Avega Systems, “provides wireless access to music stored on a home PC or media server…by integrating 802.11 connectivity, surround decoding, audio signal processing and power amplification directly into a speaker.” If a wireless network exists in the home, the speaker becomes recognized as a network device. If there is no wireless network, the speakers can create one amongst them and properly handle the audio needs of diverse products such as an iPod or DVD player.
