Spending Time Online Good for Teens?

Forget that image of a mislead teen ditching his friends to play World of Warcraft in his parents’ basement – according  to one new report, spending time online is actually beneficial to teen development. Last week, the MacArthur Foundation released a study indicating that teens use the Web to strengthen social skills and learn more about subjects that their friends might not share an interest in.

“There are myths about kids spending time online – that it is dangerous or making them lazy,” said report author Mizuko Ito, a researcher at the University of California, Irvine. “But we found that spending time online is essential for young people to pick up the social and technical skills they need to be competent citizens in the digital age.”

UK Online Spending Surges In July

The credit crunch might be biting hard globally, but it hasn’t stopped British consumers spending online. Figures for Internet commerce for July, compiled by IMRG and Capgemini, show the Brits spent $9.5 during the month, up 11.3% over June.

That breaks down of around $160 for every man, woman and child in the country, and shows a great contrast to spending in bricks-and-mortar stores, where sales fell 0.9% from June to July. Clothing, shoes and accessories were the most popular items.

Mike Petevinos, head of consulting for retail at Capgemini UK, commented:

Online Spending Topped $100 Bln in 2006

According to comScore Networks, online spending at U.S. sites during 2006 jumped 24 percent compared to 2005, to a total of $102 billion for the year. Of that spending, almost a quarter landed during the end-of-year holiday season, which comScore tallies as accounting for some $24.6 billion in spending, up 24 percent from 2005.

“2006 was certainly an exceptional year for online retailers as e-commerce spending eclipsed $100 billion for the first time, and growth remained very strong with a 24-percent increase versus last year,” said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. “The online holiday shopping season of course played a vital role in the year’s success, as spending accelerated during the final two months of the year, helping push total online retail spending over the $100 billion threshold.”
