Spore De-Authorization Tool from EA

Spore De-Authorization Tool from EA

Electronic Arts has a hit on its hands with the creator-creation and evolution game Spore, but the company has certainly run afoul of many of its users through a SecuROM authorization scheme that requires users to authorize individual computers and gaming sessions in order to play the game. Disgruntled users launched a class action suit against EA over the DRM scheme and EA raised the number of computers on which users may install Spore to five. However, if a computer crashed, was stolen, or simply wiped out, there was no way to remove valid authorization from one computer and transfer it to another.

EA Announces Spore Expansions

Electronic Arts only kicked Spore out the door at the beginning of September, but the company is already announcing add-ons and an expansion pack for the popular game.

The Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack will be available as early as November 18, and will add more than 100 new creature-building components to the game in two divergent styles—you guessed it, “creepy” and “cute.” “Creepy” will include scary, monster-like body parts, pain options and backgrounds, while the “cute” portion of the kit will offer more cartoony and charming equivalents.

EA Faces Class Action Suit over Spore DRM

Ever since EA’s Spore landed at retailers, some gamers have been chafing at the limits of DRM technology included with the game. The most common complaint was that the game’s DRM technology only permitted Spore to be installed on three computers, and provided no way to de-authorize installations to enable another. So, if you installed Spore on a notebook and that notebook was lost or stolen, one of your permitted Spore installations went with it. EA has since eased restrictions a little—installations are now permitted on up to five computers—and says it’ll work on ways for user to de-authorize installations, as well as use up to five screen names for each copy of the game.

EA Eases Spore Copyright Controls

EA Eases Spore Copyright Controls

Game maker Electronic Arts expected big things from its new release, Spore. And it got them, but it wasn’t the cries of delight. Instead there were growls of complaint when purchasers realized they could only register the game on three computers, with no way to de-authorize in installation to allow for another, and each copy only allowed for one player with one screen name to use it.

EA, it seems, has been listening to the complaints and watching the poor user reviews on sites. Now the company has said that it will allow the game to be registered on five computers instead of three, which it believes will be enough for most gamers.

Spore Hitting Stores September 7

Electronic Arts and Maxis have announced that the much-anticipated video game Spore has gone gold and will be available at North American and Asia Pacific retailers September 7—and European retailers will get a jump on things, with the game going on sale September 5.

From the creators of games like The Sims,Spore essentially puts players in charge of the development and evolution of their own custom critters: players can create their own organisms, evolve tribes, develop civilizations, and eventually take their species to space to explore universe created by other Spore players. Players will be able to customize their creatures, as well as their vehicles, buildings, and spaceships, and share all their creations with the larger Spore universe via the (ahem) Sporepedia.

Creature Creator Release Jumpstarts Spore

Creature Creator Release Jumpstarts Spore

The release of Electronic Arts’ highly anticipated Spore may still be months away, but the company got the hype wheel turning early on Tuesday with the release of Spore Creature Creator. Essentially the first part of the game, Creator will allow players to tweak and customize creatures usable in the full game in the dead time before it launches.

After playing around with different options for their creatures, players can take them on test drives, snap pictures, and make movies of them that can even be uploaded automatically to Spore channel on YouTube. The online Sporepedia will serve as a community for Spore players to share their creatures, and comment on others.
