Earlier this year, electronics giant Sony had forecast sales of some 5 million Blu-ray disc players by the end of 2008, and while the company still expects Blu-ray devices to be top sellers during the end-of-year holiday season, the company now expects to miss that mark by as much as 10 percent. In comments to Reuters, the head of Sony’s U.S. electronics unit Stan Glasgow also indicated that, despite a global economic slowdown, Blu-ray players were doing well.

Sony Announces Free U.S. Recycling
Electronics giant Sony is trying to turn over a greener leaf, announcing that it plans to launch the Sony Take Back Recycling Program in the United States beginning September 15. The program with launch with 75 drop-off locations around the United States, operated by WM Recycle America; Sony plans to expand the program to roughly 150 recycling points within a year, and hopes to have at least one drop-of in every U.S. state and a center within 20 miles of 95 percent of the U.S. population. Consumers will also be able to ship their products to a recycling center. There will be no fees for using the program, but it only applies to Sony-branded products.
Sony BDP-S300 to Drop Blu-ray Price
The senior VP of Sony Electronics‘ home products division Randy Waynick says the company plans to ratchet up competition with the rival HD DVD format by bringing down the price on Blu-ray players: by mid-year, the Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray player should start reaching retailers at a suggested price of $599, and offering more capabilities than the $999 BDP-S1 Blu-ray player Sony is offering now.
Sony Interested in Satellite Radio Services
You can already get XM Satellite Radio on your Pioneer or XR Radio portable media player, so it only makes sense that Sony would be throwing ideas around right? Stan Glasgow, president of Sony Electronics’ told Reuters at a press conference that they have been talking with Sirius and XM Radio for more than a year now – exciting stuff if you ask us. Sony introduces new flat-panel displays
The new 17-inch SDM-HX73 (17.0-inch viewable image size) and 19-inch SDM-HX93 (19.0-inch viewable image size) models feature high performing panels with outstanding brightness, contrast ratio and response time. Both models include one-touch adjustable performance settings that optimize computing, watching movies or playing games. Available later this month, the HX73 and HX93 displays are expected to cost $620 and $1,000, respectively.
“PC users are not only shifting from CRT to LCD, but they are expecting more from their displays,” said Stan Glasgow, vice president of display marketing for Sony Electronics. “From watching movies and editing photos to playing computer games and more, these new HX models will captivate consumers.”
New Sony SDM-X series LCD’s announced
The new 15-inch SDM-X53, 17-inch SDM-X73 and 19-inch SDM-X93 models maximize productivity with the exclusive ErgoStandTM control system and ErgoBrightTM technology, which improve both energy efficiency and desktop space. The ErgoStandTM control system allows users to customize their viewing positions by easily adjusting the displays’ height, tilt and swivel base. Each model tilts to several different positions up to 20 degrees, has the ability to swivel up to 350 degrees, and adjust its height position up to four inches.
