Fresh from an embarrassing product recall, Lexar has announced its new 1 and 2 GB JumpDrive Lightning USB flash drives. The JumpDrive Lightning’s come with the company’s PowerToGo software platform pre-installed, enabling users run and launch standard Windows applications direct from the JumpDrive without installing the software onto a host computer. The idea is to let users carry around a virtual PC environment on the flash drives, so they have not only their data and documents, but also the preferred applications they use to develop and manage that information.

New Lexar Flash Drive Offers Capacity Meter
At the Consumer Electronics Show today flash drive maker Lexar unveiled new USB flash drives as part of their existing JumpDrive lineup. The most interesting among these is the JumpDrive Mercury, a drive with an integrated capacity meter.

Lexar Jumps for Google
Lexar has announced that, beginning in January 2006, its portable JumpDrive USB flash drives will ship with Google applications pre-loaded, including Google Desktop, Google Toolbar, and photo organizer Picasa.
When customers plug in a Google-loaded JumpDrive, they’ll be promoted to install the free Google applications. If the user accepts the installation, the Google apps will automatically be installed and then removed from the USB drive.
Google’s applications are available for Windows only; presumably Mac and Linux users must manually format or otherwise remove the Google files from the JumpDrives to access the units’ full storage capacity. A few of Lexar’s JumpDrive offerings are also branded as Windows-only.
Lexar Unveils New USB Card Form Factor
The new USB card form factor is based on the USB Type A connector as outlined in the Universal Serial Bus Specification. At half the width and a little more than twice the height, it isvolumetrically similar to an SD card. The rugged, sturdy metal housing is intended to make the USB card suitable for use in a range of environments.
Lexar’s USB FlashCard will be the first product based on the new form factor. The USB FlashCard will offer universal plug and play connectivity with all modern operating systems leveraging the ubiquity of the USB interface. Lexar plans to introduce Full-Speed USB versions in 16MB, 32MB and 64MB capacities as well as Hi-Speed USB versions in 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB and 1GB capacities with a high performance 60MB/s interface speed in 2005.
