¡Bienvenido a México, iTunes!

¡Bienvenido a México, iTunes!

Do good things come to those who wait? More than six years after launching the iTunes Music Store in the United States, Apple has finally launched the iTunes Store in Mexico, offering music from the world’s major labels and hundreds of independent labels and featuring both Mexican and international artists. Most songs are priced at 12 pesos with albums at 120 pesos, and—like other iTunes Stores—the music is available in 256kbps, DRM-free AAC format.

The Mexican version of iTunes also features Apple’s App Store, with more than 65,000 applications available for the iPhone and iPod touch. The store also offers music videos (most of which are priced at 24 pesos) along with a podcast directory.

Like the iTunes Store before it, Apple looks to be setting the bar for the mobile applications business, with over 100,000 developers signed up for its program and over 65,000 applications available for its mobile platforms.

The software is out of the box…or, at least, it’s available for paid download. Computer maker Dell has announced that the Dell Download Store has become the first non-Microsoft service to offer unboxed versions of Microsoft software for downloadable purchase. Current offerings include a number of editions of Microsoft Office (like Standard, Professional, and Small Business editions) along with standalone applications like Word, Excell, Project, OneNote, and Visio.

“With everyday savings plus on-demand access, the Dell Download Store addresses our customers’ two main concerns: price and immediacy,” said Dell’s general manager for global software distribution Geoff Surkamer, in a statement. “In addition, downloading is a more environmentally friendly way to purchase and distribute software because there’s no need for packaging material.”

And while U.S. users are limited to just to Web for right now, mobile operator AT&T has announced plans to make a mobile version of the Ovi Store available to its customers later this year.

Just to underscore how far they have to catch up, however, Apple has announced that customers have downloaded over 1 billion programs from its App Store since it launched a little over nine months ago.
