Buggy Storms were Pushed out the Door

Buggy Storms were Pushed out the Door

If the BlackBerry Storm’s buggy software, slow interface and glitchy user experience made it feel a little half-baked, that may have been because it was. According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, device-maker Research in Motion and carrier Verizon cut necessary development time short in order to meet a Black Friday deadline.

In an interview with the paper, RIM co-Chief Executive Jim Balsillie said the team made the Nov. 21 deadline “by the skin of their teeth” after pushing back an original October deadline. Anonymous sources “close to the launch” cited by the Journal also claim that flaws in the phone’s operating system were overlooked in the last minute push.

Verizon to Offer BlackBerry Storm for $199

Verizon to Offer BlackBerry Storm for $199

Verizon Wireless has announced it will be selling the touchscreen-powered BlackBerry Storm smartphone for $199.99 beginning on November 21, putting the Storm’s price point right in line with Apple’s popular iPhone 3G. The $199.99 price is after a $50 mail-in rebate and is only available with a new two-year contract.

Verizon’s pricing for the much-anticipated BlackBerry Storm has been the subject of somewhat intense speculation after Vodaphone started giving the BlackBerry Storm to customers in the UK for free when they sign a contract. Vodafone and Verizon Wireless have exclusive locks on the BlackBerry Storm.

RIM Announces Touchscreen BlackBerry Storm

Canada’s Research in Motion has formally announced its new BlackBerry Storm smartphone, touting what the company is calling the world’s first “clickable” touchscreen design: the screen depresses slightly when the screen is pressed, giving users a sense of tactile feedback for their clicks. The phone is due to launch this fall in North America exclusively on Verizon Wireless, and will also be available to users in Europe, New Zealand, India, and Australia via Vodafone.

Olympics Offer Path For Storm Trojan

The Storm Trojan, one of the most successful of the last few years, had seemed to fall into abeyance. But now it’s back with a vengeance, spread through a link in an e-mail claiming the Olympics will be delayed or canceled because of the May earthquake in China. The link, beijing.exe, says it contains full details, but actually unleashes the Trojan.

The attack has been identified by Symantec and the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team, which has already issued an alert about the e-mails. Now there are worries that this could just be a prelude for a larger attack that coincides with the Olympic Games.

Storm Worm Returns – With Love

Storm Worm Returns - With Love

The people behind the resurgence of the Storm worm are hoping you can feel the lurve. Yes, after some time away, the Storm worm, which first surfaced in January 2007, is back, according to security group the Sans Institute.

They say researcher DavidF has detected spam containing links to the Storm worm site. The mail entices people by the header “Crazy in love with you” and contains the message “Who is loving you? Do you want to know? Just click here and choose either ‘open’ or ‘run’.” The site wants users to click on “loveyou.exe,” which installs the Storm worm.
