HP Looks To Buy EDS

HP Looks To Buy EDS

The story broke first in the Wall Street Journal, which reported that computer maker Hewlett-Packard was in talks with IT company Electronic Data Systems (EDS) to buy the company for between $12-13 billion.

That gave a sharp boost to EDS shares, which rose 27.9% – although those of HP dropped 4.7% at the news.

Once markets had closed, however, HP admitted in a statement that the story was true:

"HP today confirmed that it is engaged in advanced discussions with Electronic Data Systems Corporation regarding a possible business combination involving the two companies."

DVD-Audio Vs. SACD

Quote from the story:

“When you look at the excitement that Dolby Digital and dts 5.1-channel soundtracks from DVDs can generate played over a good home theater system, it’s not surprising that Sony/Philips and the DVD developers decided that an upgraded multichannel audio format was overdue. After all, the CD is stereo, limited to two channels. And despite Sony’s original claim, in 1983, of CD’s “Perfect Sound Forever,” complaints have surfaced over the years about certain limitations in the CD’s technical standards. “

Radeon X800, XL Distribution Costs Revealed

Quote from the article:

“We have been following the story of pricing and availability of the latest ATI cards for some time now. We have recently learned that the cost to resellers of Radeon X800 and X800 XL cards via distribution is higher than ATI’s suggested retail price. In some cases, this information changes the math on which video card we’d recommend, the ATI or the NVIDIA. “

PC Makers Shun Windows XP Reduced

According to their story, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Fujitsu Siemens Computers plan on preinstalling the full version of Windows including all of the media features regardless of the EU’s (European Commission) decision to have Microsoft offer a “medialess” version of their OS.

“It simplifies our ordering process to not have to distinguish between versions of the OS we load and ship with our systems,” a spokesperson for Dell says. “We will continue to monitor demand and could look at this again later if customer preference changes.”

According to the story, industry analysts are not surprised by the PC vendors lack of support regarding the EU’s decision.

Do Ancient Macs Make Modern Art?

Quote from the story:

In the art world, Bolam is an oddity. Many artists working with technology do so with the latest and greatest — Macs, Maya and Macromedia Flash. But Bolam’s tools are not only outdated, they were never intended for creating art in the first place.

“I could work with Mac Classics for the rest of my career and never repeat myself,” Bolam said. “People haven’t given up on drawing and painting — the possibilities haven’t been exhausted. I feel the same way.”

Lawmakers Set Sights On Violent Video Games

From the AP story:

“Pediatricians and psychologists have been warning us that violent video games are harmful to children,” said Mary Lou Dickerson, a Democratic legislator in Washington state who wrote a law now being challenged in federal court – banning the sale of some violent games to kids. “I’m optimistic that the courts will heed their warnings.”

Lawmakers in at least seven states proposed bills during the most recent legislative session that would restrict the sale of games, part of a wave that began when the 1999 Columbine High School shootings sparked an outcry over games and violence. None of the measures that passed have survived legal challenge.

TiVo To Get HDTV Capability

From a story at Wired News.

Several of the new, more robust high-definition DVRs will sport 250-GB hard drives — enough room to store 30 hours of high-definition programming or about 200 hours of standard broadcast.

The beefier hard drives are necessary because signals for high-definition TV, or HDTV, carry far more information per frame than standard TV. For example, one HDTV standard in the United States (1080i) calls for images that are 1,920 pixels by 1,080 pixels, refreshed 60 times a second. By comparison, standard analog TV in the United States is 500 dots by 525 dots.

Segway Still Hasn’t Changed The World

The Globe and Mail has posted an interesting story on the Segway.

By the end of last September, only 6,000 units had been sold. The company hasn’t released sales figures since then, but it’s clearly having a tough time. The Wall Street Journal this week reported that Segway LLC has been forced to mortgage its factory, shake up its executive team and raise an additional $31-million through a secondary offering of shares.
