Street View UK Gets The Official Nod

Street View UK Gets The Official Nod

There have been a total of 74 complaints about Google’s Street View since in launched recently in the UK, and that doesn’t count the villagers who surrounded a Street View car and prevented it photographing where they lived.

But the Information Commissioner has stated that the services actually carries just a minor risk of invasion of privacy and can go ahead, and that removing the service entirely would be "disproportionate to the relatively small risk of privacy detriment."

David Evans, the Information Commission’s senior data protection practice manager, told the BBC:

Minnesota Town Wiped Off Google Street View

Minnesota Town Wiped Off Google Street View

Privacy advocates may have been powerless to prevent Google from cataloging pictures of their homes and lawns when Street View debuted last summer, but residents of one small Minnesota town have found a way to prevent it entirely: own the streets. Residents of North Oaks, Minn. have successfully removed their town from Street View because of its unique system of privately owned streets.

EU Chafes at Google Street View

Google just can’t seem to get a break with Street View. After drawing the ire of privacy advocates in the U.S. when it launched last summer and getting a preemptive warning from Canada’s privacy commissioner that the service may not be legal there, the European Union has now also expressed concerns over bringing Street View to its cities.

According to Reuters, the European Union’s Data Protection Supervisor, Peter Hustinx, sees potential issues with Street View. “Making pictures everywhere is certainly going to create some problems,” he told reporters at a press conference on Thursday, although he did not cite any specific laws Street View would conflict with.

Google Maps Street View Illegal In Canada?

Google Maps Street View Illegal In Canada? In a pre-emptive strike, Canada’s Privacy Commissioner has warned Google that if it expands its Street View feature of Google Maps to the country, it could be breaking a law regarding individual privacy.   So far, Google has used the tool in maps of just nine US cities. It offers360-degree views at the street level, including people informally captured on camera who can easily be recognized.   The Commissioner, Jennifer Stoddart, wrote to Google last month asking forclarification on its intent. The pictures of individuals are clear enough to be considered personal information, and under Canadian law businesses disclosing personal information about individualsneed their consent first. Immersive Media Corp., which produced the images, says it has street level pictures of Canadian cities.   "The images … appear to have been collected largelywithout the consent and knowledge of the individuals who appear in the images," wrote Stoddart. "I am concerned that, if the Street View  application were deployed in Canada, it mightnot comply with our federal privacy legislation. In particular, it does not appear to meet the basic requirements of (the law)."   People could ask for their image to be removed from StreetView, but Stoddart said this would not meet Canada’s 2004 personal information protection act.
