Is the Desktop PC Disappearing?

Heading home for the holidays in college was always an ordeal for this desktop diehard.

While my friends dropped their laptops into messenger bags and walked out the door, I was still under the desk unhooking an ungodly tangle of monitor cables and USB cords, coughing on dust, and looking for enough dirty laundry to pad my fragile LCD monitor for the trip home.

It occurred to me, at some point, that it really might be better to just cave and invest in a laptop. I did, not long later, and never looked back. In fact, at this point, my home desktop has been broken for months, but I haven’t bothered to fix it because my trusty laptop gets me by just fine at home, at work, and on the road.

Energy Introduces New Act Sub

The act sub features technological breakthroughs found in its larger siblings while providing a compact alternative.

The act sub is constructed out of a 3/4” MDF enclosure, which is designed to be extremely rigid and free of resonances. The cabinet is built using Energy’s double v-groove design, creating taperededges that are very strong, while the dovetail cabinet design increases the overall cabinet rigidity.

New Revel Ultima Sub 30

Featuring a massive 15″ inverted dual-layer metal dome active driver and an auxiliary 15″ inverted dual-layer metal dome acoustic radiator, the Ultima Sub 30 delivers compelling and detailed deepbass, reaching to well below the limits of human low frequency hearing. The Revel Ultima Sub 30 is able to produce extremely high sound pressure levels with minimal distortion. The state-of-the-artactive driver is equipped with a sophisticated magnetic motor system that provides ultra-low distortion, obviating the need for servo control, and has a remarkable three inches of peak-to-peakexcursion capability. The built-in power amplifier boasts a true 1,000 watts of output power, with a peak reserve capability of 1,400 watts.

Additionally, the Ultima Sub 30 is equipped with an advanced room tuning system, delivering accurate timbral balance in virtually any residential listening environment. Conventional subwoofers are usually equipped only with simple frequency and level controls. These controls cannot correct for the inevitable room-induced frequency response variations that will occur in every listening room. The Ultima Sub 30 is equipped with a sophisticated variable frequency, variable bandwidth, and variable level three band parametric equalizer, which allows optimum integration and balancing for placement in any position and proper blending with any loudspeaker system. Available low frequency optimization PC software allows an authorized Revel dealer to acoustically analyze the listening room, and fine tune the Ultima Sub 30’s equalization system for the most accurate timbral balance and seamless blend with the other loudspeakers in the listening environment. An additional control is provided that allows optimizing the low frequency response for music as well as film soundtracks, along with an external trigger function compatible with select surround sound processors for automatic selection of the appropriate mode.
