XM to Broadcast in Surround Sound

XM Satellite Radio and audio development company Neural Audio today announced that select XM channels would begin broadcasting in 5.1 surround sound later this year. XM plans to demo XM HD Surround at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

XM HD Surround, said the satellite radio company, will become available on new home audio systems from the likes of Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc., and Yamaha in March 2006. The initial channels XM will broadcast in 5.1 surround sound, which the company says is a first for 24 hour a day stations, include free-form music channel Fine Tuning (XM Channel 76) and the classical pops music channel XM Pops (XM Channel 113) in XM HD Surround. XM will also broadcast a variety of special shows and live music performances at the XM studios in surround sound.

MP3 Surround Set for Launch

Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, inventors of mp3, together with Thomson, co-inventors of mp3 and exclusive licensing representative for their mp3 patents and software, and AgereSystems, have joined to launch mp3 SURROUND into the consumer and commercial markets. This technology will enable 5.1 channels surround-quality sound for a broad spectrum of applications includingweb-based music distribution, broadcasting systems, PC-related audiovisual or gaming applications, consumer electronics and automotive systems.

mp3 SURROUND supports high-quality multi-channel sound at bit rates comparable to those currently used to encode stereo mp3 material, resulting in files half the size of common compressed surround formats. At the same time, the new format offers complete backward compatibility to any existing mp3 software and hardware devices.

New Surround Sound MP3 Format Coming

Expected this summer, the MP3 Surround format is based on Agere Systems’ technology. “What we do is take the original surround-sound signal,” explains Peter Kroon, Agere’s chief multimedia architect, “and we down-mix that from 5.1 channels to stereo.” Rather than capturing all the additional channel information, however, the encoding uses psychoacoustic techniques to capture only spatial and speed information for additional channels, thus preserving compact file size. The MP3 Surround files are backward-compatible, so they play back as stereo tracks on existing players; updated hardware and software will play the files back as surround sound for 5.1 speakers.
