Last month, Apple’s controversial iTunes App Store policies went into the spotlight yet again when an app for using Google Voice on the iPhone failed to make it into the App Store. Google Voice is a service that enables users to receive transcriptions of voicemail message and use the same phone number for as long as they like—even if they change telecom operators or mobile carriers. A few days later the Federal Communications Commission opened an inquiry, asking Apple and AT&T to explain the nature of their agreements on iPhone applications and why Google Voice hadn’t been approved for the App Store. The company’s responses were due Friday…and raise almost as many questions as they answer.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3 Packs Web Browser
Wi-Fi enabled cameras might not be the latest thing under the sun—folks have been using integrated wireless capabilities to sideload photos and even upload images to social networking sites and photo sharing services for a while now. But try using those cameras in typical public Wi-Fi hotspots and users often run into a problem: no way to enter a password or other credentials. To fix that problem, Sony is offering the Cyber-shot DSC-G3, which the company is claiming to be the first Wi-Fi enabled digital camera with an integrated Web browser, so users can easily connect to public wireless hotspots.
AT&T, Starbucks Officially Roll Out Wi-Fi
Back in February, coffee giant Starbucks decided to ditch T-Mobile and go with AT&T as the service provider for its in-store Wi-Fi hotspots. Now, Starbucks is officially rolling out its new Wi-Fi services with AT&T, with Starbucks stores in San Antonio being the first to get the “complete” AT&T experience. AT&T Wi-Fi service will eventually be available in all U.S. company-run Starbucks locations with Wi-Fi service; the company’s expect to bring new locations online on a market-by-market basis throughout 2008.
AT&T Offering MobiTV Channels Via Wi-Fi
AT&T and wireless TV provider MobiTV on Wednesday announced plans to make 15 channels of television programming available across AT&T’s nationwide Wi-Fi network. The service will be available for $11.99 per month or $5.99 per 24-hour viewing session.
This new service, said the two companies, will offer TV channels which span national news, sports, entertainment and full-length music videos from top artists. The basic 15 channels will initially be available to through AT&T nearly 7,000 owned and operated Wi-Fi hot spots in locations like coffee shops and bookstores, with plans to add additional premium television channels later this year.
