Samsung Makes an Eye-Popping OLED Impression

Samsung Makes an Eye-Popping OLED Impression

While TV manufacturers are still struggling to scale OLED technology up to the sizes needed for mainstream televisions, it looks like mobile phones can benefit from the technology just fine in its current state. Samsung became the very first company to bring a carrier-subsidized OLED phone to the U.S. when it announced the Impression earlier this week.

We had a chance to see and handle the Impression, which resembles what you might expect if you’ve seen previous OLED displays. Much like its television counterparts, the Impression’s display possesses a vibrancy and contrast that’s seemingly impossible to achieve in standard LCD screens. Its colors have all the eye-catching potency of neon signage – in pocket-sized form.

Best Laptops Under $500

Lenovo ThinkPad R61eThinkPad R61e $487.69

Although ThinkPads have a reputation for being pricier premium notebooks intended for business travelers, a little smart shopping can land you this budget model on a shoestring. It’s not as fast as the flagship T-series, or as light as the X-series, but the R61 has been reviewed favorably in its price range and includes many of the same features Lenovo rolls into those pricier ThinkPads. When ordering, make sure to choose the second-from-cheapest model to get an Intel Dual Core processor rather than a Celeron M (a bargain upgrade for only $32 more tacked onto the final price.) Also make sure to select the cheapest Windows Vista option to sneak in under the $500 mark. The coupon code USP3PAYPAL will take an extra 15 percent off, lowering the notebook to $487.69. Buh-bye Cingular!

Soon we won’t have Cingular to kick around anymore. Beginning Monday, a new advertising campaign will get underway in which Cingular—the largest wireless phone network in the U.S.—will see its identity taken away and replaced with that of the newly reconstituted AT&T. For a short time, the shift will be marked by a transitional graphic that contains both the AT&T and Cingular logos, but eventually the AT&T logo will take center stage on all customer communications and advertising, as well as on company buildings, vehicles, and retail outlets.

Fujitsu Recalls 287,000 Sony-made Batteries

After announcing last week that it would participate in Sony’s global battery replacement program for notebook batteries, Japan’s Fujitsu announced today that was recalling 287,000 Sony-made made batteries used in the company’s notebook computers. Combined with recalls from Dell, Apple, Toshiba, and Lenovo, the number of recalled Sony-made notebook batteries has climbed to over 7.5 million.

The batter recall is another blow to electronics giant Sony, which has suffered a series of technical and public relations blows this year, including repeated delays on its forthcoming Playstation 3 gaming console, a format war between Sony-backed Blu-Ray and HD DVD next-generation DVD disks, a legal and privacy furor over copy protection software clandestinely included in Sony BMG music CDs. Sony’s share price has declined more than 10 percent since the laptop battery problem emerged in August 2006.

Palm lowers Tungsten T price

Representing a price drop of $50 USD, the Tungsten T has now received its second price cut after initially being offered for $499 USD at the time of introduction. Also, Palm is offering customers of the Tungsten T a free Veo Photo Traveler SDIO camera accessory and free shipping, both likely to act as incentives to increase sales and reduce stock of the Tungsten T now that its successor is widely available.

Samsung VoiceYepp VY-H200S 64MB review

Quote from the review:

“Introduced at CeBIT Asia 2002 last fall, Samsung continues to have high hopes in its VY-H200 S, T, and L model. Each of the 32, 64, and 128MB models are designed primarily for their voice-recording feature, and not solely as an MP3 player. Samsung also offers higher-end models of the VoiceYepp including the VY-H350 series, and the VY-H700 series. Introduced at the same show, Samsung demonstrated their new Yepp YP-750 192MB 7-color LCD MP3 player.”
