Garmin-Asus Launches Nuvifone M20 in Asia with Windows Mobile

Garmin-Asus Launches Nuvifone M20 in Asia with Windows Mobile

Joint venture Garmin-Asus has formally launched the Nuviphone M20, a more compact follow-up to the company’s first combined phone/GPS device, the Nuvifone G60. The Nuvifone M20 sports a 2.8-inch touch screen display, a 3 megapixel camera, 4 GB of Flash storage, and (of course) connectivity out the wazoo, including 2G and 2G data service along with 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 2.0 wireless networking. However, the M20 also sports something the Linux-based G60 did not: Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, including mobile versions of Microsoft’s Office productivity applications and ability to tap into Exchange-based push email.

Asus To Simplify Eee Product Line

Asus To Simplify Eee Product Line

Taiwanese computer maker Asus announced at an investor’s conference in Taipei this week that it managed to sell 4.9 million Eee PCs during 2008, a figure just short of its stated goal of selling 5 million units. Asus CEO Jerry Shen blames the near-miss on a sudden downturn in consumer spending at the end of the year as the world economy slowed down. But Asus also says it has a new strategy for 2008: after pumping out more than 20 Eee models during 2008—often just minor variations with cutsey names, but some with significant differences—the company says it plans to simplify its Eee offering in a bid to avoid consumer confusion.

Asus’s Eee PCs Get A 10-Inch Screen

Asus

On the verge of the Computex 2008 trade show in Taipei, Asus has announced the Asus Eee PC 901, an update to its surprisingly popular low-powered, low-priced, and very portable notebook computer. The Eee 901 will be available in two models—the 1000 and 1000(H)—and feature screen sizes up to 10 inches and Asus’s Super Hybrid Engine technology that, combined, can offer a whopping 7.8 hours of battery life.

HP to Offers SSDs in Business Notebooks

It was bound to happen sooner or later, but flash-based solid-state drives for notebook computers may be on the verge of entering the mainstream computing environment, as Hewlett-Packard confirmed it plans to offer solid-state drives as an option in notebook computers it announced earlier this month, and plans to offer the option on future models as well.

Speaking at a news conference in Taipei, HP’s Dan Forlenza said HP plans to offer 64 GB SSDs—probably from Samsung—as an option for its Compaq 2710p, 2510p, 6910p, and 8000 series notebook computers. Opting for an SSD instead of a traditional hard drive will add about $1,000 to the initial price of a notebook, although the cost differential will decline as SSDs become more common in the marketplace.

Asustek to Divide into Three Companies

Asustek to Divide into Three Companies

Taiwan’s Asustek, a leading PC manufacturer and well-known contract manufacturer of both PCs and consumer electronics, has announced that it will split itself into three companies in a move to separate its own brand-name business from its contract manufacturing businesses. “We think this will boost our competitiveness in each area,” said Asustek chairman Jonney Shih at a news event in Taipei.

Under the proposed split, Asustek would carry on the company’s brand manufacturing, including the company’s well-regarded (if occasionally over-flashy) Asus notebook and desktop computer lines. The company will spin off its contract PC manufacturing operations into a new company called Unihan Technology Corp., while its non-PC manufacturing activities (including casings) will be handled by the new Pegatron Technology Corporation.

AMD Finalizes New DTX Form Factor

System builders will have yet another choice of form factor for their PCs after AMD announced on Tuesday that they have finalized a new open standard, dubbed DTX, with a focus on energy efficiency. The new specification was announced at the opening of the Computex trade show in Taipei, Taiwan, just six months after AMD introduced the draft for it.

The company credited support from many hardware vendors for the quick leap from specifications on paper to a finalized standard.AMD’s partners, including Albatron, Asus, Cooler Master, ECS, Gigabyte, MSI, Silverstone, and Thermaltake will demonstrate functional DTX products during the trade show.

Intel Announces 3 Series Chipset

Intel’s executive vice president Sean Maloney took the wraps off the company’s latest chipset on Tuesday morning, at the Computex trade show in Taipei, Taiwan. The 3 Series chipset, formerly codenamed "Bearlake," will support Intel’s latest 45nm Penryn processors, which will come out later this year.

The 3 Series chipset will support DDR2 memory up to 800MHz, or DDR3 memory up to 1333MHz, along with support for Intel’s own "Turbo Memory," which is supposed to improve application load times and boot times. For the latest generation of graphics cards, a PCI Express 2.0 connection is also included.

Toshiba Intros HD DVD Writer for Notebooks

At the Computex trade show in Taipei, Toshiba plans to unveil its SD-L912A HD DVD writer for notebook computers (Japanese), enabling notebook computer users to burn single-layer HD DVD media, as well as double-layer DVDs and standard CD media.

A single-layer HD DVD disc can store up to 20 GB of data, making the media a good option for backing up large amount of files and data, such as music, images, and (of course) video. Toshiba anticipates makers of notebook computers focused on the gaming, multimedia, and desktop-replacement markets will offer the SD-L912A with their systems.

Acer’s Aspire 9800 Has A Glorious 20 Inches

Acer

Well, you can’t accuse computer maker Acer of being small-minded: the company has just announced the North American availability of its Aspire 9800 portable computer, sporting 20.1-inch, HD-capable wide-screen display and HD DVD drive. Acer had shown the 9800 at Taipei’s Computex show, and has now migrated the product to the North American market, where “bigger is better” might be an easy sell—a point Dell is also trying to prove with its XPS M2010 20-inch sorta-portable behemoth. But the Aspire 9800 comes in cheaper.

BenQ To Ship Blu-ray Burner By Year’s End

At a Taipei news conference today, BenQ CEO K.Y. Lee showed off a prototype half-height disk burner which can read and write Blu-ray disk as well as standard CD and DVD media. Lee said the company plans to ship the unit by the end of 2006. Lee declined to provide pricing information for the Blu-ray drive, noting that the eventual cost will be determined by the price of the drive’s read/write head.

Lee also said BenQ’s support for Blu-ray isn’t necessarily exclusive, although BenQ has supported Blu-ray over the competing HD DVD format. Lee noted he felt BenQ will probably have to support both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats, and expects that future burners will be able to read and write both formats.
