According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Tammy Lafky of Bird Island, Minnesota is a single mom who earns $12 an hour and doesn’t even use her computer. Her 15-year-old daughter does however, and the suit is a result of her daughter downloading music illegally over the Internet.
Lafky faces penalties that can exceed $500,000 and says that she can’t even afford a lawyer or an offer by the record companies to settle the case for $4,000.
Lafky says she doesn’t download music off the Internet and doesn’t even know how to use her computer. She said her daughter downloaded music last year when she was 14, but neither of them knew it was illegal.
