T-Mobile Expanding 3G Network

T-Mobile Expanding 3G Network

Although it still hasn’t been officially announced, U.S. mobile operator T-Mobile is widely expected to introduce the first mobile phone build on Google’s Android platform next month, in the form of the HTC Dream. The potential problem with this scenario is that, while the Dream supports 3G data connectivity, T-Mobile is the number four mobile operator and only has 3G service up in a handful of markets. T-Mobile introduced 3G service in New York City in May and has since extended service to a handful of other markets, including Miami, Houston, Boston, San Diego, and Las Vegas.

Second Life Avatar Sued

Second Life Avatar SuedHave you ever heard of the SexGen Platinum? If you’re a regular on Second Life, you might well have done – you might even own it.   Nowit’s at the center of a lawsuit, which most believe to be the first real life suit between avatars.   So what is SexGen Platinum, anyway? It’s the creation of Kevin Alderman (knownon the site as Stroker Serpentine), who realized that people who had avatars on the popular site wanted their characters to not only have realistic genitalia, but also to have them able to have sex.  SexGen Platinum, which he sells for $45 through his company, Eros LLC, is a piece of code that lets the avatars take on sexual positions. It’s placed in various objects, such as a bed, then the user clicks on the menu and can take part in a choice of sex acts.   All was well until someone broke the code and began selling unauthorized copies of SexGen. According to a suitAlderman filed last month in Tampa, Fla., the culprit is someone who uses an avatar named Volkov Catteneo. While Alderman allows uses to transfer his products, he doesn’t allow copying.  “We confronted him about it and his basic response was, ‘What are you going to do? Sue me?’” Alderman said. “I guess the mentality is that because you’re an avatar …that you are untouchable. The purpose of this suit is not only to protect our income and our product, but also to show, yes, you can be prosecuted and brought to justice.”   Second Life, created by Linden Labs has become big business. A number of major companies have a presence there, and beyond your basic avatar, everything costs money. Virtual money, known as Lindens, can beexchanged for U.S. currency ay 270 Lindens to the dollar. Linden Labs has already been forced to stop gambling in Second Life for fear it might violate gambling laws.   Alderman is just one ofmany entrepreneurs on Second Life. He has a shop there, and is investing money in a motion capture machine that will make the sex moves of avatars more realistic. His July 3 suit accuses VolkovCatteneo – or at least his currently unknown owner – of violating copyright and trademark protections by copying, distributing and selling copies of Sex Gen. Alderman is seekingunspecified damages.

RadioShack Tunes Into MovieBeam

RadioShack Tunes Into MovieBeam

RadioShack Corporation announced today that it has begun offering MovieBeam’s set-top boxes at 1,700 retail locations in 331 mjor metropolitan areas where MovieBeam service is available.

At first glance, MovieBeam—backed by Disney, Cisco, Intel, and others—seems like a lot of other set-top box services offering on-demand, rental access to movies. And, indeed, the MovieLink boxes store up to 100 movies, and offer instant on-demand access to a frequently-updated selection of new releases and popular favorites from every major Hollywood studio. But instead of tapping into a user’s satellite, cable, or broadband Internet connection, MovieBeam downloads movies over the air using a special datacasting technology riding on airwaves alongside Public Broadcasting Systems signals. MovieBeam typically offers 100 movies at a time—all downloaded and stored locally on users’ systems for instant access—with 10 new titles delivered every week, including some high-definition selections.

MovieBeam to Offer Online HD Movie Rentals

MovieBeam to Offer Online HD Movie Rentals

Last year, the Disney-founded MovieBeam digital movie rental service looked dead before ever having hit the market. Disney took a $24 million write-down on the effort, and rumor was to expect a whole lot of nothing from the effort. But last month, Disney, Intel, Cisco, and VC firms injected over $48 million into the operation, and, suddenly, MovieBeam is ready to go: MovieBeam announced today that it plans to begin offering first-run films from six of the seven major movie studios in standard digital video format

Online Fraud Declining, Losses Up?

A new report from Javelin Strategy and Research suggests that while the Internet is by no means a crime- and fraud-free utopia, the majority of fraud and identity theft occurs out in the real world rather than via the Internet. However, folks who get scammed online are losing more and more money.

According to the report (available to paid subscribers), in identity theft cases where the source of the information was known, only 9 percent stemmed from phishing scams, hacking, worms, or viruses. In contrast, nearly one third (30 percent) resulted from a lost or stolen wallet or credit card.
