TDK Unveils 200 GB Blu-Ray Media

Hey, remember back when TDK boasted they had developed 100 GB Blu-ray media and were working on 200 GB capacties? Wel, seems they’ve gone and done it. Right now, the market is just barely lurching toward the idea of storing 25 GB on Blu-ray media, but it seems TDK is all about adding capacity to the format to keep film, video, and data mavens happy.

TDK Developing 200 GB Blu-Ray Media

Hey, if you thought it was silly that TDK was already shipping recordable Blu-ray media when Blu-ray recorders haven’t reached the market yet, you’ll be happy to know the company has already made its market-preempting product obsolete.

According to Japanese press reports (subscription required), TDK has already is already succeeding in writing six-layer 200 GB Blu-ray media. Instead of writing bits on a layer of dye embedded in the discs, apparently the six-layer design actually stores data as microscopic bubbles in a bizmuth peroxide recording medium

TDK today said they were the first retailer to begin shipping bare Blu-ray Disc media for the consumer market. They’ve initially brought to retail 25GB recordable and rewritable Blu-Ray Disc media for $19.99 and $24.99 respectively.

All of these discs, which are cartridge free, are capable of delivering 2x (72Mbps) rated recording speed and are being developed with a number of formulations and manufacturing techniques to increase the longevity of the media.

TDK Plans to Cease CD, DVD Production

TDK has announced it plans to cease making recordable CD and DVD media this May, closing the doors on is Luxembourg manufacturing facility. According to a company statement, declining market prices for recordable media and increased costs of raw materials led to the decision.

The company’s European facility was established in 1990, and has the capacity to produce seven million CD-Rs and eight million DVD-Rs per month. By closing the facility and withdrawing from the CD/DVD media market, TDK has revised its profit forecasts for the year downwards by about $366 million.

TDK Shows 23.3GB Blue Laser Pototype

TDK will also show its prototype blue laser disc for Sony’s “Professional Disc for DATA” drive systems, as well as its line of 4mm and LTO Ultrium data tape recording media.

Marking one of the most significant product introductions in the company’s history, TDK will also showcase its groundbreaking prototype blue laser disc for Sony’s “Professional Disc” Systems. The disc offers an unprecedented 23.3GB storage capacity, and provides optimal video recording and playback when used with Sony’s XDCAMâ„¢ camcorders and decks. Built on blue laser technology, TDK’s blue laser disc opens entirely new possibilities in the way video will be shot, edited and distributed. It promises to revolutionize the broadcast video industry.

Take-Two buys TDK Mediactive

TDK Mediactive owns a variety of key franchises, many of them in the kids market – which Take-Two has little presence in at present. Among the franchises which the company will acquire as part of this deal are Shrek, Pirates of the Caribbean, Robotech, The Muppets, The Land Before Time, Masters of the Universe, Ultimate Fighting Championship and Star Trek.

“The addition of TDK’s mass market and children’s licensed properties to Take-Two’s properties will complement our portfolio of proprietary brands, and provide an excellent platform for Take-Two to further expand and diversify its product offerings,” commented Take-Two CEO Jeffrey Lapin.

TDK 440N Indi DVD review

Quote from the review:

“The TDK 440N Indi DVD writer is a great investment for those that plan on creating media content or backing up their computer. The instruction manual and installation video shows TDK’s dedication to the consumer while the new look of the front faceplate gives the drive a look of quality. Read and write performance on the TDK 440N was above average in our tests and the included Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 worked beautifully without a hitch. TDK once again gives us a quality product at a reasonable price in the TDK 440N Indi DVD writer. Make sure to buy DVD+RW media and an audio cable if this will be your only drive as neither is included in the 440N package.”
