Adults Adopt Texting to Contact Kids

Adults Adopt Texting to Contact Kids

Text messaging may be primarily the world of teenaged mallrats and iPhone-addicted 20-somethings, but a new survey from Sprint shows that older Americans are getting on board with the trend as well. While only 13 percent of Americans aged 50 to 64 used text messaging two years, ago, that number has grown to 20 percent more recently.

The shift toward adult text messaging seems to be driven by adults texting their children to stay in touch. Of those who did report texting, 76 percent use it to send messages to their kids, probably because data also suggests children response faster – usually immediately or within minutes.

Google Maps Gets Text Ads

Google Maps Gets Text Ads

It’s such a natural for search-related text ads that the amazing thing is that it hasn’t happened before. Google has added text ads to Google Maps.

CNET reports that some map search queries bring up a blue background text ad at the bottom of the page, while others don’t. It seems to depend on the search term being used. However, the service is new, and will certainly change in future as people bid for keywords.

Texting to Track Terrible Teen Drivers

Texting to Track Terrible Teen Drivers

Teen drivers have it rough these days. Not only can parents use technology to call them at any moment and even monitor their locations via GPS, soon some will have anonymous tipsters calling in to report on their driving as well. A new company, aptly named Text Them In, Inc. has started offering trucker-style How’s My Driving stickers and service to parents of teens.

Txt Spk Gets In 2 Teenz School Lives

Txt Spk Gets In 2 Teenz School LivesIf you’re of a certain generation, you might well hate text speak. You know what it is, a mix of abbreviations, misspellings and numbers used as shorthand to communicate by text and instantmessaging.   If it truly annoys you, then you’re out of luck. A new survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project has shown that teensadmit that text speak is finding its way into their school work. 50% says they use the informal writing styles of texting in their school work, while 38% use acronyms, and 25% put in emoticons likesmileys.   However, before you think there’s no hope for the next generation, take heart. The vast majority of teens differentiate between text speak and “real” writing –in fact, they don’t consider the former to be writing at all, but the equivalent of a phone call or a hallways greeting. Girls use text speak more than boys, according to the survey.  They recognize the importance of good writing, and 86% of them understand the importance of good writing to success in life. But they feel they need more encouragement and teaching to become goodwriters, Amanda Lenhart, a senior research specialist at the Pew Internet & American Life Project, told TechNewsWorld.   "They would like tosee more instruction, more class time and the opportunity to use some of the technological tools and use computer-based applications to help build some enthusiasm for writing. There’s a desire todraw that enthusiasm for electronic communications and bring it into more school-based writing. Educators as well as teens think that bringing technology into the classroom might have thatresult."

Texting Improves Parent-Teen Relationships?

Texting Improves Parent-Teen Relationships?

It’s rare that technology actually gets credit for improving parent-teen relations rather than purported serving as another generational divide, but Samsung claims text messaging has actually moved the two groups closer together. According to a survey commissioned by the Japanese mobile giant, teens report better relationships with their parents since picking up texting.

The results show that 53 percent of teens who text would credit texting with improved parental relations, while on the other side of the relationship, 51 percent of parents who text would make the same statement about their kids, and say that they communicate more often with them than before. If it seems that the results are skewed because only a small percentage of parents actually text with their kids, think again: the survey also found that 68 percent of parents text with their kids.

EU Texting Charges To Drop?

Sending a text or having mobile Internet access while traveling from one European to another can be an expensive business – far too expensive, according to EU Commissioner Viviane Reding.   She’s told mobile operators throughout Europe to cut their charges before summer, or the EU will step in with regulations forcing a price reduction, the BBC has reported.   "Sending text messages or downloading other data via a mobile phone while in another EU country should not be substantially more expensive for a consumer than sending text messages or downloading data at home," Reding said. "If the industry does what it claims it can do, bringing prices down to normal, then of course, regulation will not be necessary."   At present, sending a text while abroad can cost up to 95 cents, and 1MB of data up to $8.22. Reding said in no uncertain terms that she expects “credible reductions” that would leave text prices at no more than four cents above domestic levels.   With 200 billion texts sent annually in Western Europe, that will involve a lot of money.   The EU commissioner has had run-ins with mobile operators before. Last year the EU accepted her recommendations forcing operators to cut European roaming charges, on average by 50%.

T-Mobile Faces Text Messaging Lawsuit

T-Mobile Faces Text Messaging Lawsuit

T-Mobile came under fire on Wednesday from a mob of angry users who are fed up with being charged for receiving text messages they don’t want. Consumers recently filed a class action lawsuit in a U.S. District Court in Seattle, claiming that T-Mobile is breaking the law by offering no option to opt out of text service, yet continuing to charge for received messages that users cannot control.

Brits Send A Billion Texts A Week

Back in 1999, Britons sent a billion text messages from their mobile phones during the entire year. According to a new study they now send that many texts every week.   The figure has evenshocked the Mobile Data Association, which had predicted around 42 billion texts for 2007.   It’s a lot more convenient for a business now to notify lots oftheir employees about an urgent message using a text message," Mike Short, head of the MDA, told the BBC. "The UK text volumes show no real signs ofabating and the UK sits within the top six of the global league of countries sending text messages."   The fact that businesses have adopted text messaging as part of their sales anddelivery strategy has helped boost the totals. Add to that services that send out sports scores to subscribers via text, and there’s been a market explosion that’s not solely fueled bypeople texting each other. But even older mobile users have come around to text messaging these days, and the guarantee of delivery (even if it takes a while sometimes) is a reassurance for people.

Text Tips To Help Boston Cops

If you’re in Boston and witness a crime, now you’ll be able to anonymously text in your tip to the police. The City of Boston Police Department had introduced the Text A Tip Program as a way to fight the rise in Beantown’s violent crimes.   People who want to help the police, users simply have to text the word ‘TIP’ to 27463 (which, handily, spells the word ‘crime’ on the keypad). The user’s ID is blocked, but the police will text back, initiating a text dialog about the crime. However, they claim that they will not ask for any personal information on the sender, but that, if the information leads to arrest and conviction in a crime, the sender is eligible for a $1,000 reward. But there’s no mention as to how an anonymous sender might be able to claim it, especially as, on their site, Boston Police advise people to delete their text messages.   Boston has employed a traditional voice tip line for more than a decade.   “With the increased awareness of the tip line and the added option of sending a tip by text message, we hope that those who have always wanted to do the right thing, but have not spoken up for fear of reprisal, will help us,” said Boston Police Commission Ed Davis. “We need information. We need help.”   There have been 27 homicides so far this year in Boston. Last week the brother of a murder victim was beaten by gang members who told him to “stop talking to the cops.”

PayPal Mobile Payment Service Launches

PayPal, today CTIA Wireless 2006, announced a text message-based service allowing North American consumers the ability to send money from their mobile phones. Dubbed PayPal Mobile, is now available through a variety of U.S. and Canadian wireless carriers.

PayPal Mobile, said the online payment service, allows users the ability to send money, purchase items or donate to charities through their cellular phones. Consumers first register their phones by linking them online to their PayPal account. After registering the phones, a PIN is selected which is used in conjunction with each mobile payment made.
