Garmin-Asus Launches Nuvifone M20 in Asia with Windows Mobile

Joint venture Garmin-Asus has formally launched the Nuviphone M20, a more compact follow-up to the company’s first combined phone/GPS device, the Nuvifone G60. The Nuvifone M20 sports a 2.8-inch touch screen display, a 3 megapixel camera, 4 GB of Flash storage, and (of course) connectivity out the wazoo, including 2G and 2G data service along with 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 2.0 wireless networking. However, the M20 also sports something the Linux-based G60 did not: Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, including mobile versions of Microsoft’s Office productivity applications and ability to tap into Exchange-based push email.

China-Based Cyber Spy Network Uncovered

China-Based Cyber Spy Network Uncovered

It’s a major discovery, a cyber spy network that’s infected 1,295 computers in 103 countries, according to the Information Warfare Monitor (IWM), which is made up of researchers from Ottawa-based think tank SecDev Group and the University of Toronto’s Munk Centre for International Studies.

That might not seem like a lot of computers, but those machines are in foreign ministries and embassies. The discovery occurred after IWM was asked to investigate computers belonging to the Dalai Lama. From there they uncovered something far more complex, a network of spying on the ministries of foreign affairs of Iran, Bangladesh, Latvia, Indonesia, Philippines, Brunei, Barbados and Bhutan, as well as embassies of India, South Korea, Indonesia, Romania, Cyprus, Malta, Thailand, Taiwan, Portugal, Germany and Pakistan.

Toshiba Buys Fujitsu’s HDD Business

Toshiba Buys Fujitsu

The hard disk drive (HDD) is tough at the moment. Even the biggest players like Seagate and Western Digital are cutting costs and shedding staff.

Now the number six seller, Fujitsu, has agreed to sell its loss-making HDD business to rival (and number five seller) Toshiba, according to The Register.

But what exactly will Toshiba be buying? Evidently the read/write head manufacturing isn’t part of the deal, and Fujitsu has said its HDD head manufacturing operation at Nagano, Japan will go back to just making printed circuit boards for servers and telecoms kit. None of the Fujitsu employees working on HDD will lose their jobs.

Western Digital Laying Off 2,500

Western Digital Laying Off 2,500

Hard drive maker Western Digital has announced it is laying off some 2,500 employees—or about five percent of its total worldwide workforce—as part of a series of cost-cutting moves designed to bolster the company’s bottom lines as the tough economy reduces demand for IT and storage products. The company is also scaling back its revenue forecasts for hard drive sales from $2 to $2.1 billion down to $1.7 to $1.8 billion…and scaling back executive compensation.

Google Tallies 2008 Top Searches

Google Tallies 2008 Top Searches

Internet search giant Google has released its 2008 End-of-Year Zeitgeist, noting what was hot worldwide in Internet searches for the year. Unlike search engines like AOL and Yahoo who base their end-of-year summaries mostly on the frequency of terms—hence allowing Britney Spears to rule the search engine listings for years on end—Google bases its Zeitgeist both on frequency and on the novelty of terms. In other words, 2008’s zeitgeist is more about what users searched for in 2008 that they were not searching for in 2007. Google claims their method is more indicative of the “spirit of the times”…and it definitely produces some different results.

LG Intros World’s Slimmest 8MP Camera Phone

LG Intros World

Samsung may have been first to the 8-megapixel camera phone game, but LG hopes to capture its own claim to fame with the new KC780, which now holds the title of the world’s slimmest 8-megapixel phone. LG announced the sleek, sliding portrait phone on Thursday.

The KC780 claims its “world’s thinnest” title with a depth of just 13.9 millimeters, significantly slimmer than the Samsung Innov8, which measures 17.2mm in the same dimension. Besides the impressive form factor, LG has also added a number of other features normally associated with standalone digital cameras, including a Schneider-Kreuznach certified lens, smile detection, camera speeds up to ISO 1600, and DVD-quality video recording.

Thailand Tries To Close 400 Sites

The Information and Communication Technology Ministry (ICT) in Thailand is taking drastic action against a large number of web sites that it claims "disturbed the peaceful social order and morality of the people, and/or which were considered detrimental to national security" and contravened the Computer Crime Act, according to the Bangkok Post.

It’s seeking court orders to close 400 sites and advising ISPs to block 1200 others, and has asked the police to help “bring all the violators to trial.”

Among them are sites deemed to carry obscene content and over 300 the ICT claims are contemptuous of the Thai Royal family.

Telecoms Workers Wait On Burma Visas

After the cyclone hit Burma nine days ago, the UN asked the charity group Telecoms San Frontieres (TSF), which is used to going into disaster areas and setting up emergency telecoms systems, to send a group and equipment to Thailand where they’d be ready to fly into Burma. They’re still there, waiting for entry visas from the military-run Burmese government.

In that regard they’re no different from workers from so many other aid groups, as the Burmese government states it will accept aid but no aid workers.

Cyber Demos Protest Online Censorship

Cyber Demos Protest Online CensorshipChina, North Korea, Burma…they’re places where protest has been crushed. But yesterday people demonstrated against Net censorship in virtual locations from those countries.  Organized by the group Reporters Without Borders, the first Online Free Expression Day invited people to create avatars and take part in demonstrations in virtuallocations where protest would not be allowed in the real world.   In a statement RWB said, “From now on, we will organize activities every 12 March to condemn cyber-censorship throughoutthe world. A response of this kind is needed to the growing tendency to crack down on bloggers and to close websites." “Today, the first time this day is being marked, we are giving allInternet users the opportunity to demonstrate in places were protests are not normally possible. We hope many will come and protest in virtual versions of Beijing’s Tiananmen Square,Cuba’s Revolution Square or on the streets of Rangoon, in Burma. At least 62 cyber-dissidents are currently imprisoned worldwide, while more than 2,600 websites, blogs or discussions forumswere closed or made inaccessible in 2007.” UNESCO had originally supported the demonstration, but later withdrew its support.   RWB lists 15 countriesas Internet Enemies (Belarus, Burma, China, Cuba, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zimbabwe) which censor Net use and imprisondissenting voices. Another 11 – Bahrain, Eritrea, Gambia, Jordan, Libya, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Yemen – are classed as “countries underwatch.”
