Samsung Develops 5-Inch Plastic TFT-LCD

Samsung developed its new 5-inch TFT-LCD display by applying amorphous silicon technology to transparent plastic substrates. Considered the next-generation in flat panel displays, this technology involves the use of pliable plastic instead of rigid glass in TFT-LCD production. The plastic will not break and the external design can be freely shaped making potential applications virtually limitless.

The plastic TFT-LCD R&D project has been done in cooperation with SoftPixel Inc., a company specializing in plastic liquid crystal displays. The project has also received support from the Information Display R&D Center as part of the 21st Century Frontier R&D Program funded by the Korean Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Energy.

Samsung Develops 2.6-Inch VGA LCD Panel

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd today announced the world’s first a-Si (Amorphous Silicon) 2.6-inch TFT- LCD with VGA (300ppi) image quality. Using a-Si technology, mobile phone displays are now capable of projecting the same VGA format found on notebook PCs and desktop monitors.

With almost seven times the resolution of a 42-inch high-definition LCD TV at 300 pixels per inch (ppi), an a-Si enabled mobile phone can be used as a high quality mobile TV.

Is That A Rollable Display In Your Pocket?

In a news release today, Philips said they are getting closer to being able to produce “rollable displays.”  The displays combine active-matrix polymer driving electronics with a reflective “electronic ink” front plane on an extremely thin sheet of plastic. Philips publishes the current status of its technology in the February 1 issue of the scientific magazine Nature Materials.
