Mirra Personal Server Version 2.0 Released

The Mirra Personal Server provides continuous, hands-free backup for home PC users — protecting all types of digital content, such as photos, music, email, financial records, and work files. The newversion is offered at no change in pricing to new customers and as a free upgrade to existing users.

The 2.0 release builds on Mirra’s core promise of automatic protection by integrating safe, secure backup and sharing on local networks and the Internet. Now, whenever users share files or photos, they can also give friends and colleagues permission to change and add files to shared folders. All changes are not only shared — they are automatically backed up and versioned.

Apple Previews Next Version Of Mac OS X

Apple’s search technology, which it calls Spotlight, lets Mac users find any file, document or information created by any application on a Macintosh by entering the query in a search at the upper right hand corner of the desktop.

Simplifying the search process on a PC’s hard drive has emerged as one of the major goals of both Tiger and Microsoft’s next version of Windows, code-named Longhorn, which is due out in 2006.

“What they’ve (Apple) done with search is a key element of Longhorn,” said analyst Tim Bajarin of Creative Strategies, adding that Apple’s next version of OS X, code-named Tiger, will be available to consumers at least a year or more before Longhorn.

Microsoft’s New Gadget Links PC To TV

In an address Wednesday evening to kick off the International Consumer Electronics Show, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates introduced technology that allows users to take their Windows Media Center PCs and any digital photos, music and video running on the platform, and display them on TVs or other entertainment devices.

Manufacturing partners including Samsung, Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Gateway are planning to incorporate the technology, dubbed the Windows Media Center Extender, into set-top boxes for sale later this year. Apple Computer seeks new direction

But in recent years Apple’s visionary chief executive, Steve Jobs, has found another world to conquer: the field of digital media.

Bent on bringing music, photography and video to the home computer, Jobs reportedly is seriously discussing the acquisition of the world’s largest record company, Universal Music Group.

The Los Angeles Times reported Friday that Apple is set to offer conglomerate Vivendi Universal up to $6 billion for the music company. Burdened with debt, Vivendi has been exploring the sale of some or all of its entertainment assets, including its movie and theme park businesses.
