Sprint and Other Investors Give Clearwire $1.5B in Financing

clearwire-logoInvestors in Clearwire Corp., including Sprint Nextel Corp. and major cable companies, Tuesday said they are pumping an additional $1.5 billion into the company so it can keep building out its nationwide wireless data network.

Sprint, which owns 51 percent of Clearwire, is putting up $1.176 billion. Comcast Corp., the country’s largest cable company, is investing $196 million, and Time Warner Cable Inc. and Bright House Networks are adding $103 million and $19 million, respectively.

Sprint resells Clearwire’s service, based on WiMax technology, in the few markets where it’s already available. Comcast does the same, giving it an opportunity to compete with the wireless data offerings of AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc.

Time Warner to Offer AOL For Free

Time Warner Cable  plans to offer its high-speed Internet customers free access to America Online service, in a deal that could potentially add 3 million more high-speed subscribers at the cable division, Time Warner executives said on Monday.

Current AOL dial-up subscribers who live in regions served by Time Warner Cable will be asked to trade up to Time Warner Cable’s Road Runner high-speed service, which will now include AOL.

Time Warner Could Offer Cell Phone Service

” If a deal is struck, Time Warner Cable, a unit of the world’s largest media group, would be the only major cable company to offer cell-phone service, meaning it could offer television,high-speed Internet access, traditional phone service and wireless phone service.

Time Warner Cable and Sprint confirmed they were in talks, but declined to discuss timing or other details. “

AOL To Air TV Show Over Broadband

“Jack & Bobby,” starring Christine Lahti, follows the life of a single mother raising two sons, one of whom becomes the President of the United States.

The show, slated to air on the WB Network in September, will be shown to AOL for Broadband subscribers about two weeks prior to its scheduled broadcast date.

AOL is a unit of Time Warner Inc., the world’s largest media company, as measured by revenue. Time Warner and Tribune Co. co-own the WB Television Network.

Road Runner To Get Speed Boost

Time Warner Cable today announced plans to introduce a new option for its Internet, high-speed data customers-Road Runner Premium, which is up to twice as fast as its popular Road Runner core service. Most of Time Warner Cable’s 31 operating divisions will begin offering this new option to Road Runner customers beginning next month.

Road Runner Premium will offer speeds of up to 6 mega-bits per second (Mbps) downstream and 512 kilo-bits per second (kbps) upstream. This compares to the core Road Runner service, which offers speeds of up to 3Mbps downstream and 384kbps upstream. Road Runner is already one of the fastest high-speed Internet connections available through cable and is up to twice as fast as the DSL standard package in most areas.

AT&T Cuts Price On VoIP Service

AT&T’s price cut comes after critics said the $40 was too high to keep the service competitive, and after No.1 VoIP provider Vonage reduced the price of it’s most popular plan by $5 to $30 a month.

Time Warner Cable has also begun offering Voice over IP telephony, at an even higher price of $39.95 to $44.95.

Analysts expect even more price cuts as the battle for VoIP dominance heats up.

Time Warner Cable Offers VoIP Service

Digital Phone Service, as Time Warner Cable is calling their voice over Internet-protocol offering, is now available for current subscribers for a three-month trial rate of $19.95 per month. The cost of the service becomes $39.95 for subscribers of both cable and high-speed Internet, or $44.95 for subscribers of either cable or Internet after the three-month trial is over.

Time Warner Cable’s Digital Phone Service offers the following:

  • Unlimited local and nationwide calling throughout the United States.
  • Call Waiting
  • Caller ID
  • Call Waiting ID

AOL Ends Broadband Bundling Service

At the end of January, AOL stopped accepting new orders for its broadband access service, an AOL representative confirmed, as part of its strategy to sell its service without an access tether. The offering originally cost $54.95 a month for access to AOL bundled with DSL (digital subscriber line) service or with broadband service from AOL corporate cousin Time Warner Cable.

Time Warner Entering VoIP Arena

Time Warner Cable is progressing its plans to offer Voice over Internet Protocol telephone service throughout the U.S. They announced today the creation of a business unit for its residential telephone service called “Digital Phone”.

Time Warner Cable announced the creation of a new business unit today, Time Warner Cable Voice Services, which will be responsible for overseeing the rollout of its residential telephone service, known as Digital Phone.
