Tiger Woods Goes Web 2.0 with Subscription-Based PGA Game

Tiger Woods Goes Web 2.0 with Subscription-Based PGA Game

Though most of the titles to show up at this year’s E3 will hit physical shelves in cardboard boxes any number of months later, Electronic Arts has decided to dip its toe into a Web 2.0 model of distribution on one title: Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online will allow users to pay for their gaming experience monthly and play through a browser, rather than buying a disc and installing it.

The company announced the rather unusual distribution model for its title – which calls to mind Quake Live – on Friday, amid news of its other more conventional releases.

It will debut in the fall of this year.

EA Makes Sport of Dueling Celebrities

Electronic Arts’ previously announced new EA Sports Freestyle label for casual gamers is finally getting off the ground with a completely new franchise: Celebrity Sports Showdown. The first title in the property, announced Wednesday for Nintendo Wii, will give players a chance to compete as their favorite celebrities in different sports-based mini games.

The selection of a dozen celebrities includes well-recognized athletes like Mia Hamm and Kristi Yamaguchi alongside plenty of less athletic choices, such as Fergie and Avril Lavigne. Games will range from the mundane, like beach volleyball and inner tubing, to the bizarre, like air racing and dueling.

AACS: High-Def DVD Copy Protection Cracked

Although there’s been much debate during the last few weeks whether a cracker using the name Muslix64 had successfully broken AACS copy protection on HD DVD discs would bear out, the feat appears to be legitimate: in a brief statement, AACS LA has confirmed that AACS title keys have been successfully ferretted out, distributed via the Internet, and used to decode protected high-definition movie content. AACS spokesperson Michael Ayers described the crack as having “sobering possibilities,” but described its impact as limited at the moment, in part due to the limited HD content available on the market and the current impracticality of sharing mammoth high-definition video files via the Internet.

Nintendo Reveals 2005 US Release Schedule

“While the list doesn’t contain many surprises, it does feature a couple of titles which hadn’t previously been confirmed for launch during the period – most notably the new Legend of Zelda title on the GameCube, which could appear in Q2.

In fact, Q2 is looking like the strongest quarter in quite some time for the GameCube, with Legend of Zelda potentially appearing alongside supernatural FPS title Geist, Donkey Konga 2 and RPG title Fire Emblem, while the first quarter will see the likes of Capcom’s Resident Evil 4, Sega’s Virtua Quest and Namco’s Star Fox: Assault turning up.”

Valve Submits Half-Life 2 Candidate

“The submission of a release candidate means that Valve has finished the creative work on the title, and it now only remains for Vivendi Universal’s QA department to approve the title – or bounce it back for some quick fixes if show-stopping bugs are found.

As such, a release date for the title should be announced shortly – with Valve marketing director Doug Lombardi confirming last night that “we don’t have a release date from VU at this time, but we’re hoping they will pull out a release date soon.”"
