Although my measures still indicate MySpace is the largest social networking site in the United States, it’s no secret that the service has been losing ground to FaceBook, which may still ag behind in the United States but has already surpassed MySpace worldwide in terms of its total usership, and is also experiencing faster growth. Now, MySpace’s parent company News Corp. has announced that "by mutual agreement" MySpace co-founder Chris DeWolfe will not be renewing his contract and will leave the CEO position "in the near future."

MySpace Adds Celebrities to Friends List
Facebook might be getting all the media attention lately, but MySpace is still the 800-pound gorilla of the social networking sphere, and its never shown any hesitation to hitch its wagon to anything that might bring eyeballs and mouseclicks its way. Today, the site launched MySpace Celebrity, a new content channel where MySpace users can keep up on entertainment news, blogs, videos, and events…as well as server as a central point for MySpace users to, like, totally check out the profiles of more than 300 official celebrity profiles.
MySpace Opens Instant Messaging Beta
Social networking site MySpace officially launched a beta version of its MySpaceIM instant messaging client—although the company notes it began rolling out the software a year ago, and it’s been spreading virally ever since, to the point where 17 million MySpace users have already given it a shot.
“This is a product with personality,” said MySpace president and co-founder Tom Anderson, in a statement. “MySpaceIM was born out of user feedback and we’ve spent the last year listening to our community and tweaking it to match their needs. MySpace will continue to build an open, unique feature set that’s as creative and expressive as our users.”
MySpace Announces Political Reality TV Show
Reality TV shows have been used to pick out the next singing sensations, models, and even Coyote Ugly bartenders. Now MySpace wants to use the medium to pick who we’ll put in office. The company announced Wednesday that it will partner with Mark Burnett Productions to produce INDEPENDENT, a reality TV show that will test participants’ political chops using input from online communities.
The winner will receive one million dollars that he or she is obligated to use in a political fashion. The winning contestant could donate it all to a cause, form a third political party, or even use it to support his or her own presidential bid.
MySpace Invites Users to Vote Early
Pundits have been pondering just how much influence social networking sites like the ever-popular MySpace might be able to exert on U.S. election politics: declared presidential candidates from both major parties have assembled MySpace pages and are enthusiastically inviting the sites’ online-savvy youth demographic to sign on as their friends, and organizers alternately quake in fear and glee as they ponder the potential person-to-person capabilities of social networking services to spread candidates’ messages (or misinformation) and mobilize young voters to actively participate in the political process—and perhaps even vote.
