Potential Google Toolbar Hack

Are you like many others, with a Google Toolbar added on to your browser? If so, you’d better be careful about adding buttons to it. According to a story on TechNewsWorld, a security researcher has found a vulnerability that could allow a hacker to get control of your PC if you add a button.

Google has an API that allows users to create toolbar buttons, with the information stored in an XML file. A user needs to use a link to the XML file to install it.

Yahoo Shares with New Toolbar, Bookmarks

Internet giant Yahoo today introduced new versions of its Yahoo Toolbar and Yahoo Bookmarks Web browser add-ons, aiming to make it simpler for users to save, organize, and search through their bookmarks, as well as share their favorite Web sites with friends and family.

“Today’s launch of the new, integrated Yahoo Toolbar and Yahoo Bookmarks with advanced features puts the Web at consumers’ fingertips,” said Tomi Poutanen, Yahoo Search’s director of product management. “By focusing on the Yahoo Bookmarks and del.icio.us brands we are able to deliver to consumers market-leading products for both personal and social bookmarking.”

Yahoo! Updates Toolbar

Yahoo! over the weekend rolled out new enhancements to their Yahoo! Toolbar for IE and Yahoo! Toolbar for Firefox Web browser add-ons. Both toolbars are available for free download from the Web portal’s dedicated site.

Updates for Yahoo! Toolbar for IE version 6.3, announced Yahoo! via their Yahoo! Search blog, include support for tabbed browsing from within Internet Explorer 5 and 6. Yahoo!’s version 1.1.1 for Firefox “improves a few things…with bookmarks, mail alerts, and Anti Spy, among other things”.

Google Updates Toolbar, AutoLink Remains

“When Google first released Toolbar 3 in February, it faced criticism from Webmasters who didn’t like the idea of the search giant altering content, or creating new links, on their sites withouttheir permission. Microsoft had put up a trial balloon in 2001 for a similar feature based called Smart Tags, but dropped the idea after similar heat from users and site creators.

Google Toolbar now shades AutoLink-made links blue so that they better stand out on the page. Toolbar 3 also lets users change the default provider of the information from these links. For instance, users can switch from Google Maps as the supplier of address AutoLinks to MapQuest or YahooMaps. “

Yahoo Spyware App Comes to Firefox

“Yahoo also said today it will make its toolbar available for the Mac and Linux systems, though without Anti-Spy. The Yahoo Toolbar offers button and bookmark customization, one-click RSS subscription, search history, translation, Web search, and Yahoo Mail alerts.

According to a company spokesperson, the updated software was scheduled to be available Tuesday evening. ”

Yahoo Toolbar Targets More Than Spyware

“The Sunnyvale, Calif., company on Wednesday took the beta tag off the Yahoo Toolbar with Anti-Spy and changed its default scanning settings to detect both spyware and adware by default, Yahoo officials told eWEEK.com during the Search Engines Strategies conference here.

As reported after Anti-Spy went into beta in May, Yahoo Inc. received criticism from anti-spyware advocates for differentiating between spyware and adware by automatically checking for spyware programs but requiring users to select a box to also scan for adware. “
