Canada’s i4i Wins $200 Million Patent Judgement Against Microsoft

Canada

A Texas federal jury has ordered Microsoft Corporation to pay Canadian software developer i4i some $200 million in damages for infringing on a document manipulation patent in both Microsoft Word 2003 and 2007. i4i is a privately-held software company based in Toronto that focuses on content management solutions and collaborative technologies; the patent focuses on manipulating a document’s structure and content separately from each other.

Microsoft has consistently denied it has infringed on i4i’s patent, and furthermore asserts that i4i’s patent is invalid. “We believe the evidence clearly demonstrated that we do not infringe and that the i4i patent is invalid,” said Microsoft spokesman David Bowermaster, n a statement. “We believe this award of damages is legally and factually unsupported, so we will ask the court to overturn the verdict.”

An $85,000 Cell Phone Bill

An $85,000 Cell Phone BillMany of us have had cell phone bills that are higher than we’d like, but few (if any) can watch Canadian Piotr Staniaszek, who was stunned when he opened the envelope to discover he owed $65,00CDN ($63,800 US).   It turns out that he misinterpreted the Bell Mobility $10 unlimited browser plan, believing that meant he could use it as a modemfor his computer. So he downloaded HD movies and plenty of other large files, believing he was getting a bargain.   At least, until he received his bill.   When he spoke to the company, thinking they’d made a mistake, he was told that his total, after more downloading, was now up to $85k CDN ($83,500 US). As a goodwill gesture, it was lowered to $3,243 ($3,143 US), butStaniaszek plans to fight the charges, according to the Toronto Globe and Mail.   When he renewed his contract, Staniaszek received a new phone withthe unlimited browser plan.   "I told them I wasn’t aware I would be charged for hooking up my phone to the computer. I’m going to try and fight it, because I didn’t know about the extracharges…” he told CBC News. "The thing is, they’ve cut my phone off for being like $100 over. Here, I’m $85,000 over and nobody bothered to giveme a call and tell me what was going on."

iSkin Brings Vibes to 30 GB iPod

Toronto’s iSkin has just announced new versions of its funky Vibes protective cases for iPod—this time reproportioned to accommodate Apple’s 30 GB video-capable iPod. Originally issued for Apple’s iPod mini and first-generation iPod shuffle, the Vibes cases feature anime-inspired illustrations by Simone Legno, co-founder and designer for tokidoki, beloved by fashionistas and adopted by Mercedes Benz, LeSportsac handbags, pop sensation Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas, and actress Jessica Alba.

The Vibes cases feature a solid outside layer with texture bumps for a solid grip, plus iSkin’s “SI” (Silicone Inside) payer to protect against shocks and scratches. The cases also offer a removable rotary belt click (called the RevoClip2) for hooking the iPod onto a belt, jacket, bag, or other item.

MySpace Partners in Darfur Aid Campaign

The words “MySpace” and “genocide” don’t often appear in the same sentence—usually it’s just “stalking” or “school bomb threat”—but today social networking giant MySpace announced a partnership with humanitarian organization Oxfam and nearly two dozen bands to raise awareness of—and funds for—the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan’s Darfur region. The Rock for Darfur campaign will feature more than 20 concerts across North America on October 21, online interactive promotions, and a public service announcement featuring actor Samuel L. Jackson which will appear in theaters in front of selected 20th Century Fox films, as well as on cable and online outlets.

ATI World Headquarters Tour

Quote from the article:

“Roughly two years ago ATI unleashed their most revolutionary graphics core to date, the R300, also known as the Radeon 9700. It took the graphics scene by storm and since then has changed the way most of us looked at ATI. Since then, the successors to the R300 have all been top in graphics performance and image quality.

However, ATI isn’t just responsible for the Radeon series of graphics cards, their products and technologies are also found throughout many multimedia, television and telephony products. We here at VR-Zone wanted to visit our friends at ATI not only to discuss current and new technology, but to see how the employees of ATI designed, created, worked and played.

Microsoft Launches New Shopping Site

Microsoft is working on a new shopping Web site for software, hardware, and peripherals that it plans to advertise in the Windows XP Start Menu and the Internet Explorer Web browser.

Called “Windows Marketplace,” the Web site is slated to go live for U.S. Windows users by year’s end, according to Microsoft, which plans to officially announce the online store on Monday at its Worldwide Partner Conference in Toronto.

The Windows Marketplace will be a way for Microsoft partners to peddle their wares to the millions of Windows users, the Redmond, Washington-based software vendor says in a statement.

Interview With ATI’s CEO Dave Orton

Quote from the interview:

“Prior to the launch of Radeon X800 ATI held an “ATI Technology Days” seminar for press over in Toronto. Whilst there we had the opportunity to talk with the man in charge of steering ATI’s operations at the moment. We had a short time to sit down with Dave Orton and quiz him about the directions ATI is taking and to look at their engineering operations for the PC graphics side of ATI’s business. “
