Glitch Hits London Stock Exchange

An outage on Monday meant that the London Stock Exchange was forced to cease trading for a little over seven hours on Monday.

It began a little after 9.15 in the morning, just 45 minutes after trading had begun, and wasn’t resolved until around 4.30 pm, meaning the to all intents and purposes the Stock Exchange lost a whole day’s trading. The problem was fixed and trading was normal yesterday, although the LSE didn’t give the reason for the problem.

Unsafe Equipment Chargers Hit U.K.

We use chargers all the time for portable games consoles, to charge up mobile phone, MP3 players – so much of our daily gear needs to be plugged in and recharged regularly. We do it without thought. But in Britain, Trading Standards has issued a warning about cheap Chinese chargers on sale in markets and online that are dangerous and could cause electrocution of fires.

Some of the chargers have the code DE62347066, according to the BBC, which revealed the story. Others carry no code but are sold under the name Travel Charger.

eBay Calls For E.U. Trading Law Change

eBay has launched a critique of trading laws in the European Union, which it describes as from the “last century” by not allowing customers to save money by cross-border trading. It also claims the manufacturers are exploiting the laws to try and limit the effect of online trading, and will be heading a lobby on online traders working for change at the European Parliament.

Paloma Castro, head of EU liaison for eBay, told the BBC:

"Entrenched manufacturers want to continue making money as they did in the 1950s, but the business models have to adapt for the new economy.”
