Intel and Transmeta Settle Patent Dispute

Intel and Transmeta Settle Patent Dispute

Chipmakers Intel and Transmeta have settled their patent dispute, with Intel agreeing to pay Transmeta some $250 million dollars to settle all claims and get a perpetual, non-exclusive license to all Transmeta patents and patent applications for the next ten years. Intel is to pay Transmeta $150 million up front, then $20 million a year for the next five years.

“We are very pleased to have reached this agreement with Intel,” said Transmeta CEO and president Les Crudele, in a statement. “We believe that this arrangement will create value for Transmeta stockholders both by realizing immediate financial value for our intellectual property rights and by supporting our technology development and licensing business going forward.”

Transmeta Crusoe Powers New Tablet PCs

Transmeta Corporation and DuraTab Corporation today announced two DuraTab Tablet PCs that utilize Transmeta’s energy efficient, high performance Crusoe TM5800 processor.

DuraTab’s 8″ and 12″ Tablet PCs, running Microsoft Windows XP, are 802.11g wireless ready, and built with a metal casing to withstand the most rugged computing environments, while providing exceptional performance and up to seven hours of battery life for productivity at the office or in the field.

“Transmeta’s processor technology enables our products to be fanless, run quietly and be cool to the touch, with extended battery life for hours of operation,” said Mark Burns, president, DuraTab Corporation. “Many business environments, whether indoors or outdoors, are harsh and not conducive to today’s less rugged mobile computer designs.”

Transmeta Crusoe To Power FlipStart MiniPC

Transmeta Corporation today announced that the company’s Crusoe processor has been selected by Vulcan Inc. for the upcoming FlipStart MiniPC, a product featured as a Designtechnica “First Look”in February.

FlipStart is an innovative and compact mobile computer, combining the performance and functionality of Microsoft Windows XP with the connectivity of wireless PDAs to provide users with high productivity through continuous (WLAN and WAN) access to software, email, and the Web.

“Transmeta’s energy efficient, high performance processors are well-suited for FlipStart’s small form factor design,” said Rod Fleck, director of engineering, Vulcan, Inc. “Vulcan has also designed FlipStart to accept a new internal motherboard with Transmeta’s new Efficeon

Transmeta To Offer Even Smaller Processors

Transmeta Corporation today introduced its Crusoe TM5700 and TM5900 microprocessors, creating a new standard in ultra-compact, efficient computing. The new processors feature an integratedNorthbridge and are available in a 21mm x 21mm package for increased design flexibility and to enable smaller form factors for x86-compatible, energy efficient mobile and embedded computing.

The small footprint of the Transmeta Crusoe TM5700/TM5900 processors make it ideal for applications that require high performance processing within small and thermally constrained environments, including thin clients, blade servers, printers, copiers, point-of-sale terminals, smart displays, portable consumer devices, ultra-personal computers (UPCs) and set-top boxes.

Transmeta to launch new Efficeon processor

The new Efficeon is being heralded as the best chance the small chip company has to compete against rival Intel Corp.

“It’s the second most important day in the company’s history,” since Transmeta first launched its Crusoe chip in 2000, said Brian Alger, an analyst at Pacific Growth Equities.

Santa Clara, California-based Transmeta ran into production problems with Crusoe and failed to gain the support of major PC manufacturers.

But, Hewlett-Packard Co.  is expressing support for the Efficeon, while Nvidia Corp. has said it will develop a multimedia processor for Transmeta’s chips, including Efficeon.

Transmeta unveils Efficeon brand and logo

Efficeon ushers in a new era (eon) of efficient computing for users of ultra-portable and mainstream notebook computers. Likewise, Efficeon enables innovation and new classes of devices such astablet PCs, ultra-personal computers, silent desktop computers, blade servers and embedded systems.

The Efficeon microprocessor offers an unmatched combination of power efficiency, design flexibility, performance-on-demand and low cost, and will be a leader in delivering best-in-class performance, per watt, per dollar.

Transmeta’s ‘Astro’ slated for September

Transmeta Corporation  announced that its next generation TM8000 processor incorporates Low Pin Count (LPC) Flash technologies from Sharp Microelectronics and STMicroelectronics. Thesetechnologies bolster Transmeta’s goal of efficient computing by offering design flexibility, industry standard support and enhanced security.

LPC Flash allows for fewer signals and support components while enhancing design simplicity. Sharp, STMicroelectronics and Transmeta are combining the benefits of proven reliability with energyefficiency and competitive cost in new, 16-megabit density LPC technology products.

Microsoft uses Transmeta in Smart Displays

This designation reflects the value of Transmeta’s energy efficient processor technology for Smart Displays running Microsoft® Windows® CE .NET and reinforces the very highperformance capabilities of these processors for demanding applications.

Smart Displays are wireless, touch screen monitors that allow users to access Microsoft Windows XP-based PCs from remote locations in the home or office. In so doing, Smart Displays enableconvenient, extended access to the information, applications and services of the main PC. These devices connect to PCs from up to approximately 100 feet away via an 802.11b wireless connection.
