Hitachi Rolls Out 500 GB Portable Drive

If you love your notebook computer but lament its lack of storage capacity compared desktop systems (with all those tempting drive bays), then Hitachi has some good news for you: the company has announced two 500 GB 2.5-inch SATA hard drives suitable for use in notebook computers and other portable devices. The Travelstar 5K500 will be available in February, with the Travelstar E5K500 following in the second quarter of 2008.

Hitachi Improves Upon 2.5-inch Drives

In its next-generation disk-based storage technology for notebooks, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies is looking beyond capacity to advance the art of hard disk drives. With storage-capacity leadership securely under its belt, Hitachi GST is introducing the new Travelstar 4K40 — not bigger, just better.

As the leader in both 2.5-inch technology and segment share, Hitachi GST is making a bold move in the mainstream notebook hard drive space by putting capacity aside for the moment to boost all aspects of reliability. Hitachi’s new 40 GB, 4200 RPM hard drive is a reliability-focused product, achieved through the following key technical enhancements:
