Convicted File-Sharer Wants Third Trial

Convicted File-Sharer Wants Third Trial

Jammie Thomas-Rasset, the Minnesota mom who was convicted again of file-sharing in her second trial and given a $1.92 million fine, is seeking yet a third trial.

Calling her conviction for downloading and sharing a grand total of 24 songs through Kazaa "excessive, shocking, and monstrous," she had her lawyers argue a motion that the damages awarded to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) were “grossly excessive,” and that rather than pursue justice, they instead made an example of her.

After a number of days in court, and plenty of heated testimony, the trial of Swedish file-sharing site The Pirate Bay has ended, with lawyers for both sides delivering their closing arguments. Now it’s up to the judge to deliver a verdict, which is expected to take several weeks.

The four men behind The Pirate Bay – Frederik Neij, Carl Lundstom, Peter Sunde and Gottfrid Warg – stand accused of promoting copyright infringement. Other charges were dropped early in the trial.

Prosecutor Haakan Roswall told the court:

Seiko Epson Develops Organic EL Panel

The new panel has 640 x 480 pixels with a resolution of 64ppi. The company built an organic EL panel that has a display area of larger than 10 inches for the first time. Before Seiko Epson, other manufacturers built EL panels larger than 10 inches on trial. For example, Sony Corp built a 24.2-inch model and International Display Technology Co, Ltd made a 20-inch model on trial, respectively.

Seiko Epson has been promoting an idea that TVs instead of mobile phones are the main application of organic EL panels. The 12.5-inch trial panel is a strategic move to build large TVs, the company said.

The trial, which is free for selected consumers, is based on Nextel’s new “Wireless Broadband” network which uses technology based on FLASH-OFDM and offers secure, IP-based broadband access over a wireless connection.

FLASH-OFDM is a technology that originated in Bell Labs in early 1998. It is centered on FLASH (Fast Low-latency Access with Seamless Handoff) OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing), an innovative air interface technology designed for the delivery of advanced Internet services in the mobile environment. The technology is based on the OFDM airlink, a wireless access method that combines the attributes of its two predecessors – TDMA and CDMA – to address the unique demands posed by mobile users of broadband data and packetized voice applications. FLASH-OFDM enables the deployment of all-IP, packet-switched mobile broadband network.
