SilentBanker Trojan Gets More Deadly

SilentBanker Trojan Gets More Deadly

The SilentBanker Trojan, as its name implies, targets financial web pages, using a keylogger to steal password details. Although the Trojan itself isn’t new, there is a fresh wrinkle that makes it far more dangerous – a root kit that hides infected files when a user searches for them, according to Vnunet.

Symantec researcher , Liam O’Murchu explained:

“Whenever a user tries to view any files on the computer, the Trojan intercepts that request and removes any reference to the Trojan’s files effectively – making the files invisible.”

SecureMac Reports Mac OS X Trojan

SecureMac Reports Mac OS X Trojan

Real Mac nerds have always known that Apple’s Macintosh has no special immunity to viruses and worms—it’s just that the greater malware community has historically spent its time exploiting Windows. However, as the Mac has resurged in popularity, it was only a matter of time before serious malware began to target the Mac—and a new trojan reported by SecureMac may be the tip of the iceberg.

Olympics Offer Path For Storm Trojan

The Storm Trojan, one of the most successful of the last few years, had seemed to fall into abeyance. But now it’s back with a vengeance, spread through a link in an e-mail claiming the Olympics will be delayed or canceled because of the May earthquake in China. The link, beijing.exe, says it contains full details, but actually unleashes the Trojan.

The attack has been identified by Symantec and the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team, which has already issued an alert about the e-mails. Now there are worries that this could just be a prelude for a larger attack that coincides with the Olympic Games.

Mac Trojan Surfaces

Security firm Intego has reported the emergence of a Trojan that hits Macs, a very rare event, given the reputation of the Apple machine as malware free.   It’s been found in the likeliest of places – porn web sites. According to the company, when a user clicks on a still to view a movie, they’re instructed to click and download a codec to be able to use QuickTime.   Installing loads the Trojan onto the machine. The Trojan is a DNC changer – in other words, it changes the computer’s DNS server to a new, malicious one that hjacks some Web requests, to phishing or porn sites. This is a smart Trojan, too; it provides different versions of itself, depending on the user’s location.   According to Intego,   “Under Mac OS X 10.4, there is no way to see the changed DNS server in the operating system’s GUI. Under Mac OS X 10.5, this can be seen in the Advanced Network preferences; the added DNS servers are dimmed, and cannot be removed manually. (Intego is currently testing previous versions of Mac OS X; it is likely that they can be infected as well, since all versions of Mac OS X have the scutil command). The Trojan horse also installs a root crontab which checks every minute to ensure that its DNS server is still active. Since changing a network location could change the DNS server, this cron job ensures that, in such a case, the malicious DNS server remains the active server.”

Low-Threat Mac OS X Trojan Appears

A Trojan horse aimed at Apple’s Mac OS X operating system has appeared, purporting to be screenshots of the company’s forthcoming Mac OS X 10.5 “Leopard” operating system. Although the Trojan, dubbed “OSX/LeapA” by antivirus firms, can spread itself via the iChat instant messaging program and damage applications on a Mac OS X computer, unlike many Windows Trojans, it spreads by fooling users into launching it manually, rather than by leveraging security flaws in the operating system.

Symantec Identifies Sony PSP Trojan

Utility and security firm Symantec says it has uncovered what it believes to be the first Trojan application for a gaming device, a program which claims to enable users to run their own programs on a Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP), but actually wipes out the machine.

New Trojan Horse Targets Mac OSX

Intego, the Macintosh security specialist, has just released updated virus definitions for Intego VirusBarrier to protect Mac users against the first Trojan horse that affects Mac OS X. This Trojanhorse, MP3Concept (MP3Virus.Gen), exploits a weakness in Mac OS X where applications can appear to be other types of files.

The Trojan horse’s code is encapsulated in the ID3 tag of an MP3 (digital music) file. This code is in reality a hidden application that can run on any Macintosh computer running Mac OS X.
