Intel Buys Physics Developer Havok

In an unexpected move, chipmaking giant Intel has announced it is acquiring Havok, Inc., a leading developer of physics and animation tools mostly used in video games and other digital media. Terms of the aquisition were not revealed. Under the deal, Havok will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intel, and continue to develop solutions for the gaming and movie industries.

“Havok is a proven leader in physics technology for gaming and digital content, and will become a key element of Intel’s visual computing and graphics efforts,” said Renee J. James, VP and general manager of Intel’s Software and Solutions Group, in a statement. “Havok will operate its business as usual, which will allow them to continue developing products that are offered across all platforms in the industry.”

Microsoft, HP Unveil New PC Designs

Although observers expected the Windows Hardware and Engineering Conference (WinHEC) here to discuss Microsoft’s delayed next-generation Longhorn operating system, it appears that Microsoft executives will instead encourage developers to focus on the PC. Jim Allchin, group vice-president of Microsoft’s platforms group will unveil the HP-designed “Troy” business concept PC on Tuesday, as well as the “Hermes” mobile concept PC.

comScore Networks, the leader in the use of the Internet to measure and understand consumer behavior, today released an analysis of Internet visitation and preferences related to Super Bowl XXXVIII. The analysis tracked game day Web visitation driven by the Super Bowl and related publicity stunts, such as the now famous Janet Jackson incident and the halftime on-field streaker. In addition, comScore’s third annual Super Bowl survey revealed this year’s most liked advertisements.
