UAE Spyware Blackberry Update

Blackberry customers of UAE telecoms company Etisalat responded positively when they received a text from the company suggesting an update that would improve performance. What they received was anything but an improvement, according to the BBC.

Among those who installed the update, which wasn’t authorized by handset maker RIM, there have been numerous complaints of decreased battery life and crashes, and complaints that the company’s customer service could do nothing to help. It can also give unauthorized access to personal texts and e-mails. Etisalat has 145,000 Blackberry customers.

Asia Pacific Systems (AP Systems, President Jung Ki-ro) held a commencement ceremony for its geostationary satellite mobile service on April 6, in their office building at Gasan-dong, Seoul. The service is the first commercial service in Korea using a geosynchronous high earth orbit satellite.

An AP Systems’ satellite phone costs 924,000 won (US$701.30), and using 50 minutes in a month costs 80,000 won (US$60.50), which is the cheapest flat rate.

AP Systems predicts that it will earn 7.5 billion won (US$5.7 million) and collect 6,000 subscribers in Korea in its first year by providing distinguished service no matter where someone is.

In a short filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, chipmaker AMD has revealed that it plans to write down a significant amount of the investment it made to buy video graphics developer ATI. AMD acquired ATI in 2006 for over $5 billion, and has now concluded that the "current carrying value of its goodwill…was impaired." In other words, ATI isn’t worth as much today as AMD thought it was when it made the acquisition.

New LG Qiblah Phone Points To Mecca

LG’s F7100 model is equipped with more upgraded functions compared to the initial Mecca indicator phone launched last year. Thus, LG Electronics is pushing to further strengthen itsregion-friendly marketing.

LG Electronics has introduced to the market the Qiblah phone (model:LG-F7100) which comes complete with embedded compass, direction indication and prayer time alarm (Azan feature), usable in 500cities worldwide. LG Electronics has launched the Mecca indicator phone in UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and other Middle East nations, as well as North African nations. LGE held a launching ceremony inDubai, on July 20th.

Sony Ericsson Ships 3G Z1010 Phone

“We are in the final stages of testing of the model with a number of telecom operators who have commissioned 3G in their markets,” said Jan Wareby, corporate executive vice-president and head of sales and marketing.

“Sony Ericsson is very clear in that it does not want to make products that are not as good as the GSM phones already available in the market. Issues such as a longer battery life had to be addressed.
