Nokia keeps pushing on the Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) front, announcing its new 6301 handset should land in Europe later this year. The idea behind UMA phones is to offer seamless transitions between WLAN technologies like Wi-Fi and mobile access via GSM and 3G mobile networks. The multimode technologies enable users to integrate their land-line and mobile lives in a single handset. European mobile operator Orange will be one of the first to offer the 6301 later this year for about €230.

T-Mobile Takes HotSpot @Home National
Mobile operator T-Mobile has taken its HotSpot @Home program nationwide, combining VoIP calling via Wi-Fi networks with traditional cellular phone service—with seamless transitions between the two. The service relies on dual-mode phones which combine GSM and Wi-Fi capabilities, with the general intention that the services complement each other in areas where one service is weak: Wi-Fi often offers good coverage inside buildings, while traditional GSM cellular service is often accessible in public places and on the road. And by using VoIP calling, mobile users aren’t consuming precious minutes, and T-Mobile doesn’t incur the costs of transmitting call data over its own network.
Nokia Blasts Out Four New Phones
At Nokia’s Capital Days event in Amsterdam today, the world’s largest mobile phone maker announced four new handset models—and unlike many recent Nokia announcements which target the high end of the mobile ecosystem, these new units aim squarely at the mid-range and (in one case) the entry levels of the cellular phone market. “These new products underscore our commitment to offer a range of mobile phones that give consumers a choice in selecting the right balance of technology and design to meet their lifestyle and budget,” said Kai Oistamo, Nokia’s Executive VP and General Manager in a statement. The question is when (and if) these models will be picked up by North American wireless operators?
