Mozilla Posts A New Version Of Firefox

Mozilla has issued an update for its Firefox 3 browser. Update 3.0.7, which installed automatically yesterday, giving increased stability as well as offering several security patches.

Among the five patches are three that Mozilla has rated as critical, including to the PNG and XL browser components that could previously have resulted in a hacker being able to remotely execute code.

The stability issues addressed include a bug that could leave the file menu disabled, and other that caused cookie files to vanish. The update includes fixes for Mac, Linux and Windows versions of the browser.

Apple Releases iPhone 2.2 Software

Apple has released version 2.2 of its software for the iPhone and iPod touch, tweaking the interface on the devices and adding significant new features to the integrated Maps applications. The update is available for free via iTunes, but eager updaters should take note that the update is mammoth, weighing in between 240 and 270 MB, depending on the device being updated.

AVG Mistakes Windows File For Malware

AVG Mistakes Windows File For Malware

The Windows file user32.dll is not malware. However, in an AVG antivirus update issued on Sunday, it was wrongly identified as the banking Trojan PSW.Banker4.APSA, according to ZDNet.

Those who followed the recommendation and deleted the file discovered that they either could not boot up their machines or they continually rebooted. Unsurprisingly, that left the forums filled with people seeking advice.

Later the same day the company issued another update which corrected the error.

Sony Posts PlayStation 3 v2.41 Firmware

Sony Posts PlayStation 3 v2.41 Firmware

Last week, Sony was forced to pull version 2.40 of its PlayStation 3 firmware after receiving reports that, in some instances, the update was “bricking” PS3 consoles, making them inoperable after users applied the update. Now, Sony has posted version 2.41 of its PlayStation 3 firmware, claiming to have solved the problem.

Sony describes problems with the 2.40 firmware as impacting a “limited number of users;” however, as yet, the company has made no public statement on how (or whether) it will help those users get their PS3s functioning again.

Updated: 7/2/08 3:47 PST

Sony has announced that it will release the new firmware update for the PS3 – it’s 2.40, in case you were counting – on July 2. Under it, players will be able to use the XrossMediaBar (XMB) to communicate with a vastly increased range of friends, now up to 100 contacts, as well as several other things, without leaving a game.

Users can press the PS button to pause the game, or set their status to “not available” when they don’t want to be distracted.

Apple Ends Stealth Windows Safari Installs

Apple Ends Stealth Windows Safari Installs

Last month, Apple endured some harsh criticism from the Windows community for using its Software Update program—normally used to keep Apple software like iTunes and QuickTime up-to-date—to push its Safari Web browser to Windows users. It wasn’t so much the fact that Apple made Safari available for download via Software Update, but that the Safari application appeared as an recommended, enabled-by-default download within the application. For most Windows users, the Safari download would constitute new software, not an update to existing software the user had (presumably) deliberately chosen to install.

Apple Draws Ire Pushing Safari to Windows

Apple Draws Ire Pushing Safari to Windows

Apple has been shipping its own Web browser Safari with Mac OS X for several years now, and announced a version Safari for Windows a year ago. Safari represents a healthy share of the Macintosh browser market, but in terms of the overall Internet Safari is still in the single digits in terms of browser share. So no one was truly surprised that Apple would attempt to leverage the near ubiquity of its QuickTime and iTunes software as a way to introduce Windows users to other Apple applications: what surprises people is that Apple is using the updating capability to push new applications to those users by default.

Vista SP1 Causes Problems

Vista SP1 Causes ProblemsBlue screens. Invalid drivers. Yes, Microsoft has released Service Pack 1 for its Vista operating system, and the complaints are flooding in.   One of thebiggest problems seems to be with Symantec, who drivers have a problem with the update, or for which new drivers are not yet available, and won’t be forsome weeks. The drivers cover Endpoint Protection and Network Access Control, two pillars of Symantec’s flagship enterprise security products, according to ZDNet.  Microsoft had warned that those products would have problems.   It’s not only some vendors who are unhappy, A number of users have had grave problems downloading the update. Somehave reported getting blue screens, others with drivers disappearing.   Microsoft has said that it will put out updated drivers ahead of general updates in future, but offered no explanation fornot doing it this time. In an e-mail the company said, "We want our customers to have the best possible experience with Windows Vista SP1, so we have configured Windows Update to initially delayoffering the service pack to PCs with these identified drivers until the issues are resolved. In order to deliver SP1 to these PCs, we worked with our partners to produce driver updates for thedrivers that were reported to be problematic when updating to SP1. Updated drivers for the many of the issues found are available on Windows Update as ‘optional’ updates today. Ultimately, we will beusing Windows Update to automatically deliver these updated drivers to PCs in advance of offering them SP1."

Windows Vista SP1 Officially Released

Windows Vista SP1 Officially Released

Although it’s been available as a retail offering for a little while now, Microsoft has officially released Windows Vista SP1, the long-anticipated updated to its flagship computer operating system. The update weighs in at over 400 megabytes (almost 730 MB for the 64-bit version!) and rather than focusing on slick new features, Vista SP1 includes almost two dozen security updates and 550 hot fixes. Vista SP1 is currently available for users of English, Spanish, French, German, and Japanese versions of Windows Vista, with versions for additional languages coming in early April. Microsoft recommends users install Vista SP1 using Windows Update; users who want to update using a standalone installer should install prerequisite driver updates first via Windows Update.

Microsoft Fixes 11 Windows Security Flaws

Microsoft Fixes 11 Windows Security Flaws

Following a comparatively quiet update in January, Microsoft’s monthly security update for February 2008 rolls out eleven security fixes to its Microsoft Windows operating systems, six of which the company considers critical. The most obvious of the bunch would enable a specially-crafted Web page to execute arbitrary code on a users’ system; the vulnerability impacts Internet Explorer 5.01 up to Internet Explorer 7.

Three of the critical fixes land in Microsoft Office 2000, XP, and 2003, and also impact Office 2004 for Macintosh, although the more recent 2007 and 2008 released of Office for both platforms are immune. The problem could lead to remote code execution.
