Mozilla Issues Firefox Updates

Mozilla has issued updates, all rated as “critical” for both the Firefox 2 and 3 browsers.

Firefox 3 receives three patches, the first for Mac OSX, to stop a potential attack by a malformed .gif file. The second fixes a flaw in the uniform resource identifier (URI) that could let external apps access the computer. The final Firefox fix addresses the way the browser handles CSS code. Without the fix, it’s possible for a crafted CSS object to crash the application then allow remote code execution.

Two pair of updates for Firefox 2 address the URI and CSS issues.

Enum Directory Tries For All Contact Info

Can you imagine a phone book that would let you look up all the ways everyone can be contacted, online and off?   That’s the eventual goal of the UK Enum directory.   It will begin alittle less ambitiously, focusing on UK net telephone networks.   Run by Nominet, Enum, also known asTelephone Number Mapping, was set up to “define a Domain Name System (DNS)-based architecture and protocols for mapping a telephone number to a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) which can beused to contact a resource associated with that number,” according to a statement.   To date there has been no directory of VoIP numbers, which could fuel a surge in Internet telephony.  "It’s going to change the business model for communication providers quite seriously," Jay Daley, technology director at Nominet, told the BBC.   A number of other countries areworking on similar directories, and eventually the directories are likely to include every way a person can be contacted – landline, VoIP, mobile, and e-mail.

W3C Releases New Mobile Web Standard

From the W3C Press Release:

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) announces the release of the Composite Capability/Preference Profiles (CC/PP): Structure and Vocabularies 1.0 Recommendation. CC/PP 1.0 is a system for expressing device capabilities and user preferences, using the Resource Description Framework (RDF). Used to guide the adaptation of content, a CC/PP profile describes device capabilities and user preferences.

A W3C Recommendation is the equivalent of a Web standard, indicating that this W3C-developed specification is stable, contributes to Web interoperability, and has been reviewed by the W3C Membership, who favor its adoption by the industry.
