A study to be published in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence find that, at least among college students, the type and frequency of video game play can parallel real-life risk behaviors like drug and alcohol abuse, as well as poor personal relationships and self-esteem. The authors don’t propose a causal relationship between gaming and these traits, but suggest that video gaming habits might cluster with what would generally be seen as negative outcomes in children in adolescents.

RIAA Targets Transferring Music to PCs
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) hasn’t won many friends in the public sphere lately, what with filing tens of thousands of lawsuits against music fans believed to be distributing music online in violation of copyright, sending letters to college students and others threatening legal action unless they pay a settlement, and (of course) falsely targeting many individuals in these actions.
But in an unusual move in a file-sharing case the RIAA is brining against Arizona resident Jeffrey Howell, RIAA attorney Ira Schwartz characterizes MP3 files Howell allegedly shared via the Internet as "unauthorized copies." (PDF) The catch? These are MP3 files Howell created from music CDs he legally purchased.
Mobile Phones Don’t Raise Cancer Risk
A study published in the British Medical Journal has uncovered no link between the incidence of glioma (the most common type of brain tumor) and cell phone use.
The study, conducted by the British branch of the large-scale Interphone survey, surveyed 2,782 people in five areas of the U.K., including 966 people 18 to 69 years of age who were diagnosed with glioma and 1,716 others randomly selected from general practitioner lists. The survey found no relationship between the risk of glioma and the time of first use of a mobile phone; the total time of use of a mobile phone; or the cumulative number of calls or hours of mobile phone use.
New 8GB CompactFlash Cards
Expanding the storage capabilities of the portable computing market, US Modular has announced production support for 8GB sized CompactFlash cards. The storage medium is about the size of a matchbook. This new series of flash memory has a 40x speed rating, with a minimum sustained write speed of 6MB.
The current line of consumer CompactFlash offered by US Modular range from 64MB to 8GB, and speeds vary from 4X-80X. The X is a multiplier of 150Kbytes a second. They support PIO, and DMA modes, and may even be used as a fixed disk.
Laptop Usage Tops 200M Users
According to the report by Computer Industry Almanac, mobile PC usage for 2005 is expected to reach around 230 million systems and over the next five years, these numbers will more than double to over 480 million mobile PC’s in use. This is no doubt due to the lowering price of laptops, including WiFi network adoption.
In the grand scheme of things, laptops are expected to account for over 25% of the total worldwide PC’s being in use in 2005. And by the year 2010, this number will jump to 36% according to the report. We would not be surprised to see this number be a lot higher.
CEA Pushes for Wireless Devices on Planes
In-flight use of wireless data, rather than voice functionality, should be permitted for individuals who choose to use wireless phones, email devices, PDAs or laptops while flying, urged the ConsumerElectronics Association (CEA) in comments filed today with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
In its comments, CEA called for careful evaluation of changes to rules regarding the use of portable electronic devices aboard aircraft.
“It is absolutely imperative that the airlines, the FCC and the wireless industry give careful consideration to the impact of cell phone calls on airplanes,” said CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro. “There is no denying we are a mobile and connected society, but individuals can maintain air-to-ground communication quickly and effectively through the use of wireless data and Internet access, and there are clear benefits to such services on airplanes.”
Etymotic ER-6i Canal Phones Review
Quote from the review at Designtechnica:
“Etymotic is one of ‘the big two’ in the arena of canal phones. Known mostly for the high end ER-4S cans, Etymotic decided to throw their hat into the iPod popularity ring with the ER-6i. This is slightly confusing because the company also offers a black ER-6 model, and consumers’ first impressions would make them believe that the ‘i’ is just a marketing gimmick aimed at wooing the iGeneration. But, there is a different driver used in the 6i that outputs stronger bass, and is easier to drive. This makes them perfect for mobile device use, and particularly Apple iPod and Sony PSP use. As with all canal phones, external sound is almost completely blocked, so use only when it is safe to ignore the rest of the world.”
Blogging Can Threaten Enterprises
Blogging is rapidly emerging as a threat to Internet users. A blog (short for weblog) is a personal journal that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. Blogs generally represent the personality of the author or reflect the purpose of the Web site that hosts the blog. While blogs have a legitimate use, online journals pose serious threats to enterprise confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Blogs are potentially contributory to regulatory non-compliance in that blogs may not be documented communications and may also violate privacy considerations.

Make Cellphone Calls From the Air By 2006
“The Toulouse, France-based aircraft builder completed its first in-flight trial of phones that use the global system for mobile communications, or GSM, the dominant wireless technology in Europe and Asia, Airbus said in an e-mailed statement. Airbus said tests were performed with several different GSM phones used simultaneously for both voice calls and text messages, paving the way for future widespread use aboard airliners
NEC Introduces New e228 Cell Phone
Like all 3 video-mobiles by NEC, the e228 is constantly connected to the Internet and can synchronize completely with Outlook Calendar and other PC applications, which makes it suitable for personal as well as professional use.
